New Silverado 2017, 1500 4 x 4

Have any of you bought one of these to tow? I'm thinking of trading my 2013 caddy SRX in for it, but says I have to disconnect the battery, Tom said he can fix a disconnect that will work so I don't have to do that.

Otherwise seems pretty simple though the sales people at the dealership couldn't show me how to do it. They did figure it out though.

I really like a truck and it has more room in it, but just not sure, sounds like a pretty good deal though.

We also don't have anything that will go in the snow and this will so another reason for considering it.

I may just go ahead, have to make my decision this evening.

I tow a 2016 GMC Canyon which has the same requirement, I had a battery disconnect installed so I just turn a dial to disconnect the battery and back to connect the battery. It was suggested to make sure your key is in the off position whenever you use the switch.

Do what it says in the manual, not what ANYBODY else says.

My quick disconnect was installed by the dealer and does the same action as removing the battery terminal

I installed a battery disconnect switch in my 2016. I wish I could disable the steering wheel locks that's the only reason the key has to stay on and therefor the battery disconnected.

I agree with you Chargerman. I heard the steering lock could be removed but haven't seen it done yet.

Same issue with my 2015 Colorado 4X4. I installed a Battery Brain. It is a battery disconnect that is operated by a key fob, no need to open the hood. Road Master has a similar device but costs more. I have read that some have had a non chipped key cut that will unlock the steering wheel but not start the truck.

It would be great to disable the steering wheel lock and not worry about the battery or having the vehicle unsecured

GM seems to have gone backwards, my 2011 does not lock the steering wheel after going through procedure to place it in tow mode and no need to disconnect battery.

Disconnecting the battery has nothing to do with the steering wheel lock. Others have been told the reason for disconnecting the battery has to do with the electric power steering and possible damage to it if the battery is not disconnected. There is a long thread under Toads Colorado/Canyon starting in late 2014 that discusses this issue and more. It is worth a read.

Something I found on my Colorado is if you turn the key to ACC the wheel unlocks and if you then turn the key off and leave it in the ignition the wheel remains unlocked until you remove the key. I actually towed 300 miles that way with a rubber band keeping the key in just to see if it worked. Then I installed the Battery Brain and now I leave the key in ACC with battery disconnected.
