I will be buying several new tires for my MH.

I know to check the date codes as I order/purchase them to insure that they are 'new'.

My question is?

How current should the date codes be? 1 week or 6 months or what?

When I got mine they were all less than a month old. In fact when I ordered them there were none in the US so they must have been made about the time I ordered them. It was the 305/70's on the front axle.

Ideally, they would be about a month old. Practically, I would say less than a year. More than that, perhaps a discount is in order.

This is the most practical way to look at it, when I got my Sailun tires they were 6 months old. Not as new as I would like, but I can live with that as I will get 7 years out of them and maybe even more.

Mine were 6 months old at time of purchase and I was good with that. Yokohama's in stock.

bought 6 new tires 22.5 4 1wk old 2 1 yr old

they were stored @ the dealer but were signed off as new.

so far no complaints but put the new old ones on the rear outside so that I can watch them.

The age you get depends a lot on the tire size and brand. Tires are made in abtches and warehoused to wait for orders. Some less common sizes are only made every 6-12 months, so you are likely to get several month old tires unless you happen to buy right after the production run. Other sizes and models may be in high demand and production runs are done every month or two - those tires will always have fresh dates. RVs tend to use sizes that aren't made in high volume, so 1-6 months of age is common. Sometimes approaching a year.

Discuss tire age with the dealers and tell them your expectation. They don't have any real control over what comes from the warehouse, but they can send back tires you reject. The tire manufacturers don't recognize an age issue until 5+ years, but they will start the warranty on your sales invoice date (so keep it as long as you own the tires).

That dealer was feeding you quite a ration of you-know-what!

Michelin recommends their tires be inspected by an authorized dealer when they're 5 years old, then they're good for 2 more years. Yokohama's web site just says to replace their tires when they reach 10 years old. Other manufacturers fall in between those two.

The DOT doesn't even have any enforcement officers that could pull you over in the first place! It sounds like that dealer was really desperate to sell some tires. I hope you didn't fall for it!

Last Nov. Michelin arranged the replacement of my six 3 1/2 year old sidewall cracked Michelin tires with old "new" tires......(per the DOT date codes the replacements were all manufactured within 2 weeks of the cracked ones).
BTW, it was a take it or leave it offer from Michelin Customer Care.

Needless to say I will never buy another Michelin tire.

mel s ..............My old Michelins lasted 10 years and 100,000 miles (295/80/22.5) But not recommended for safety. I did buy more Michelins again, but there are tires out there that are just as good or better. (example .. continentals, toyo's, I've been told} I'll be happy to outlast these that are on it now.

Think of it in a little different terms. Very few if any companies will replace a 3 1/2 year old product with anything other than the same product. If you total your car the insurance company isn't going t replace it with a brand new one. They're going to replace it with something of like value. It sounds like Michelin has done that.
