newbie mistake?

We have a Thor Citation and are just now getting ready for a trip. I de-winterized everything correctly I think, but when I turn on the water pump and turn on the water it pump rattles something fierce. What did I do wrong?

Did you put water in the tank? How long did you let the pump run? It sometimes takes a little while to work the air out of the system.
Just a guess on my part

My coach has a selector valve to switch between filling the tank from shore water and actually using the tank. If that valve is left in tank fill position the water pump cannot pressurized the system and will continue to run. If you do not have that valve, check for another valve you
left in the wrong position ...winterizing, bypass, etc.

Another thing to look for is a selector valve in the water line near the pump inlet. Many motorhomes have a "winterizing valve" that directs the input line to the pump from the fresh water tank to a line that can be put in a bottle of RV antifreeze. If you have this valve and it's in the "winterize " position it's trying to suck water from the wrong place.

Our winterizing line has a screw on cap that's installed on the end after the antifreeze has been pulled into the fresh water lines. The cap prevents antifreeze from flowing out the tube. It also doesn't allow anything to be drawn through the tube.

The pump will make all kinds of noise if it's either drawing air or trying to suck water through the capped line. Unless you do it for hours I doubt you'll hurt the pump. It's "self priming" so it can handle running dry for a short period of time.

Ok. The obvious. I'll go there.

Are you sure it's not the normal sound a water pump makes? These pumps aren't exactly quiet.

I have a Thor and the water pump was screwed down to the floor under the frig. , sounded like something was ready to come apart. I removed the screws and put a foam pad under the pump, the hoses hold it in place, you can hear it run now but no big deal.
