Noob question on LP tank refillis

Around here if you have a 20 lb or 30 lb propane tank when you take it to get refilled they charge you a flat rate to refill based on capacity. It doesn't matter if it's completely empty, or if it just needs topping off, you always get charged for the full capacity. So, how does it work with a MH, where they have different size tanks? Do they just charge you by the gallon, or is it still some flat rate based on the size of the tank?

Here is WA all propane refills must be done using a pump and meter. It's the only way to get an accurate measurement.

Doesn't work that way around here. I would go to another propane refill station if I were you.

I had one place that somehow put 9 gallons in a 7 gallon(40#) tank... twice, and denied his pump/meter was cheating people.

.

Could be the 80% overfill protection valve is missing or faulty ( 7/9 = close to 0.8) or he didn't open the tell-tale bleeder

The other stations I usually go to never got more than 7 gallons in, never, in any of the tanks I took there. I had three.

I did that once and it took over 1/2 hour to get someone out there to help me.

I generally fill the RV propane at campgrounds and have always been charged by the gallon. In one park there was a mobile propane truck in the park so I asked him to fill my tank. He said there was a $60 minimum so I said "No Thanks" as I knew I only needed 10 - 12 gallons.
