Onan code 36 not fuel pump/filter
Generator-Onan Microquiet 4000.....All of a sudden I'm getting a no-start and a code 36 [no run but no command shutdown].....tank full, plenty of fuel pumping. clean low hour unit.
I know 90% of the time its lack of fuel...... the anti-dieseling solenoid at the bottom of the carb has no voltage on startup try......giving it 12VDC I get starting then surging.
Carb is CLEAN......filter GOOD.......pump flowing ALOT of gas.....oil FULL.
I believe bad oil level sensor gives a different code.
I suspect control board......
any other IDEAS before I spend 209$?????

Well I know you said it's pumping a lot of fuel but your testing that with the generator shut down I presume. I just made a post on another similar question. It may be worth your read.

Isn't the code always in memory until the next code that shows up? In other words that 36 code could have happened at any time in the life of the generator and not related to your problem. Unplug something to show a new code, plug it back in and see if the 36 code returns.
That information may just relate to the diesel generators. I dug it out of the cobwebs upstairs.

The anti-dieseling fuel solenoid is not getting 12VDC to open it.......everything else works, fuel to carb, spark, starter.....the fuel pump sends fuel out like a fire hose.....
Since the control board sends power to the fuel solenoid, and all the wires n connections are good, i must conclude that the control board is gone....i guess

I called Customer Service at Onan last month on mine when it threw a code 36. They initially thought fuel pump, filter, or carb solenoid. But they also thought it really could be the control board. I've changed the pump and filter since then and no more problems. Fingers crossed.

Thanks
having checked the fuel flow and the solenoid, and since this occurred while trying to start with a bad battery, probably giving a voltage spike, i have to go with the control board.
I'm going to get one from Flight Systems, they are factory repairable.

bad battery
musta gave a voltage surge on startup attempt.......new control board fixed the no 12vdc to fuel solenoid problem.
Surging was the altitude adjustment knob on carb....if u turned it to sea level, it would 'spring' back alittle just enough to lean motor out causing surge.
I cut the communist plastic stops off the knob so I could turn it to where it would not surge after 'springback' which I could not fix with oil.....theres a spring that's suppose to give knob enough friction to stay where its put.
Carb is clean and knob is very close to sea level position.
But yeah surging is usually a dirty carb.

Hate to start a new thread so I’ll revove this one,I also have 50 hours on my Onan,it all of a sudden started dieing after anywhere from 5-20 minutes, code 36. Good fuel output from pump, have heard a clicking like the primer won’t stop since we got the RV,but never had a problem with unit shutting off,now we just can’t rely on it running very long at all.About to go on a three week trip and shop can’t get us in for two weeks, about to leave in a day or two.

re: Onan Code 36 Dies after 15-20-min
Dzldust, I am having same problem w/ my 20-yo Emerald Plus, SUSPECT fuel PUMP quits when pump gets HOT (have had several vehicles that had that problem, but on them, the FP relay was $10 plug-in and experience says they should ALSO be changed when pump goes bad.) On the ONAN, the RELAY is mounted to a $100+ CIRCUIT BOARD. The OTHER ITEM I discovered tonight in the SERVICE MANUAL is a RESISTOR INLINE w/ the power wire to the fuel Pump, so that leaves another possibility. RECOMMEND: 1) Check (loosen) BOWL DRAIN screw on bottom of carb to verify FUEL vs loss of fuel AFTER shut-down; (use something like a spray paint lid to catch fuel (if any?) to reduce FIRE RISK (HAVE EXTINGUISHER HANDY); 2) See if Pump is HOT to the touch?; (suspect bad pump will show signs of being hot?). 3) Check for POWER at fuel pump power WIRE connector after failure, while still hot? (If you have pump power after shutdown, verifies RESISTOR is Good, and Leads to bad pump)? 4) If YOU HAVE NO POWER TO PUMP WHILE CRANKING shortly after engine dies, check RESISTOR FOR CONTINUITY/ Resistance VALUE? (Note: The ONAN FP is $100+ (depends on model/ vendor), I found one aftermarket for $28 on Amazon); 5) If circuit board/ RELAY is the reason for the power loss to the FP, then the engine will restart, but die when START button is released (Because the START function/ circuit bypasses the Low Oil Pressure SWITCH and also bypasses the FP RELAY on the circuit board). HOPE this helps YOU (and me)... now we gotta "get 'er done" :-) (So to summarize, possibilities are: fuel pump, FP relay/ circuit board, Resistor, Oil Pressure Switch/ wire, fuel FILTER, hose.) Luck to us both :-)

re: Fuel PUMP
TIP: Save yourself aggravation/ damage, and use LINE WRENCHES (flare nut wrenches) FOR ANY THREADED Fuel Pump/ filter/ carb line nuts to prevent egging/ bending and stripping. https://www.lowes.com/pd/Kobalt-3-Pi...h-Set/50124447

I had a 36 ( but on my diesel) .... after chasing stuff around like the fuel filter, etc, , I found it to be a bad 12v battery power connection to the genset.
