Onan diesel 8.0 starts, won't idle
I have a 95 Onan Genset 8.0 diesel. It will start, but won't idle. If you half the throttle open it will run fine; just not at idle. I know this question has probably been asked a hundred times, but I could not find it.
Thank you.

I suspect a dirty fuel system may be involved. I suggest adding a fuel system cleaner in the proper proportion(or a bit more) to the fuel tank and running the genset a few hrs to insure the cleaner has passed through the fuel system.
If that doesn't help then you can think about spending money on the problem, like change fuel filter, change fuel pump, etc.

Have you ever changed the fuel filter?
The symptoms you have described are typical of a restriction of fuel flow at idle.
My fuel filter, and I believe yours might be too, is cylinder shaped and can be accessed at the bottom of the generator. It is typically held into place with a large cushion clamp and the fuel line on each end are band clamps that you can get off with needle nose pliers.
You will know it is more than likely the filter once you remove it and try to blow air through it. Under normal conditions, you shouldn't have any resistance. If you do, naughty....naughty filter.
When you put the new filter on, you may want to use the appropriate size stainless steel hose clamps on both sides of the fuel hose instead of the band clamps which will make it easier for future exchanges and you won't need a set of crimping pliers.
Good luck and please report back to the forum for the benefit of others.

Well, it was none of the above. Turns out, it is the fault switch. Once, I reset it, the generator ran fine. But, now it leads to another problem. The generator will run for ten to fifteen minutes, the the fault switch will trip again. Any ideas?

Tolazy2,
On that model, do you get a fault code illuminated anywhere?......can you give me the model number and year of your generator?

I don't see a place for any codes, or have not located yet. The model is 8DKDFJ and is in a 96 Fleetwood.

I sent you a personal message off-forum regarding the Service Manual for your genset.

Ok. So it was overheating and tripping the fault breaker. A new thermostat and fan belt, and back up and running. Thanks to everyone for their help.

Sorry I don't know what's wrong, but I do know if you hold throttle open is a No no.
