Onan fuel supply
Hi guys,
I'm trying to help my Dad get his generator running on his 91 Pace Arrow, but can't get fuel to it. I tried sucking on the fuel line (Yech!) but couldn't get anything, not even air. I tried to trace it to the tank, but it's wedged between the frame and tank. Any advice? Thanks!

The main fuel tank has to be at least 1/4 full for the genset to get fuel.

Obstruction? Kink or compression? Did you get air as if there is a leak? I had a mh with a genny and the fuel line wore through over a cross member. It was sucking air and not pulling fuel.

Where did you disconnect fuel line? Remove input to fuel pump and try blow/suck there. There is just fuel line from tank to pump The pump may be clogged/gummed up.

I've used a hand pumped vacuum pump with a bottle in between to try to pull gas through the line. Works well.

If you can get to it, pull the fuel line off of the generator. Use a rubber hose that will fit the generator and is long enough to reach to a small fuel can. Put the hose in the fuel can and see if it draws fuel. This will let you know if the pump is working.
Most likely, the hose from the tank to the generator is bad. It's probably the original which would make it over 23 years old.

This is the best suggestion as it will narrow down the problem to either fuel line or generator. Then work from there...

Nobody mentioned this so will put this thought out there.
Have you looked for fuel filters between the tank and the genny? Sometimes they plug up.

You may have solved your problem with this comment. I had an old Pace Arrow (1978) that had one of the gas tanks mounted so that the hose was squeezed off between the tank and the frame. In my case it gave the engine just enough fuel to run, but not enough to run right. Yours may be completely squeezed off.

I agree. 82 PA same deal, 1/4 or more in rear tank.

Argh!
Thanks for the input everyone. I'm still figuring out how the forum works, including forgetting my password etc...
I've narrowed it down to the fuel pump (which I didn't see before, derp!) The hoses are all clear, but when I remove the feed line from the carb. there is no siginificant fuel flow while cranking. There is voltage at the pump while cranking, so I'm guessing the pump is bad, but don't know how to confirm it without buying one and replacing it. Any further input will be appreciated.

You should be able to hear it and feel it as it vibrates. If it is bad, nothing you can do except replace it and they are not cheap.

How much fuel is in the gas tank?
Generators will usually shut off at about a quarter tank so you can get to a gas station.
