When I lived in CA I had a DP With 1800 hrs, travel buddy had a gasser with the onan 5500, it had 3,000 hrs on it, only thing he did was replace the belt and tensioner!, if it runs good leave it alone!

I agree with the "If it ain't broke why do you have a wrench in your hand" Theory of operation. My Onan Genny has almost 3000hrs on it and I have changed oil, filters, but leave the rest of it alone. BTW, Onan 6500. The only thing I have the generator for, is generating power, the only thing the generator does is generate power. We're both happy.

When I adjusted the valve clearance on my 5500, removal of the valve covers gave me room to remove the plugs. Below, my plugs after 13 years.Click image for larger version

Might I suggest for a Transmission jack, either HF, or maybe even a rental

My plugs looked good, changed anyway. The valve lash was loose, adjusted to .004. Cleaned engine cooling fins, remove secondary fuel filter at carburetor.

I staked up some concrete blocks, put 2'x4' piece of plywood on them and a small rolling platform disconnected fuel line and wiring rolled it out, easy.
I like to stay on top of things, do the schedule maintenance, to stave off any problems.
Thanks for all the comments and suggestions.

You're the man. We think alike.

Going the extra mile was a smart thing to do.

FWIW to others...yes that right hand plug is tough to get to but it can be removed and replaced with the right socket, swivel and extension.

So you have a diesel generator with plugs?
