Well,
Once you have the sensor out, the first thing you'll need to do is, get a very close look at the sensor cavity and see if there's any sort of corrosion buildup surrounding the threads. If there is, then you'll have to do what's necessary to clean all that out so that there's a clear path for coolant to circulate around the new sensor when installed.
As for coating the sensor with a sealant, I used pipe dope and, it and the generator have worked flawlessly for over 3 years now.
