Just cleaned our 1990 for selling and had great success with the Mr Clean Magic Eraser on plastics. You'll get through quite a lot of them, but it got most of our plastics back to almost white.

Used an Armorall protectant product on the stripes after Magic Eraser and they actually look quite nice, gave them a bit of a shine again.

I don't know if this is a long term solution though.

For our new motorhome, we went to a lady that does graphics out of her home, she's quoted us around $1500 (Canadian) to strip and redo the stripes on our Sunseeker. I've seen her work and it's very good.

Sorry, a bit off topic, since we're no longer contemplating painting, but it might be worth asking a few signage or car graphics places, it's not a bad price when you factor in your own time.

I decided instead of painting I would just restriping. I bought 150 feet of 4" premium vinyl tape. Instead of removing the old tape, I cleaned it with denatured alcohol and left it on as a template.
I put the new tape over the old, and trimmed with scissors and a EXACTO razor knife. It was easier than I thought it would be.

Do you have any pictures and a link to your source for the tape?

Thanks.

Thanks for the pics and link. Do you feel that the new strips covered the cracked old stripes satisfactorily?

Yes, very much so. Up close really looking hard, you can see some of the cracks of the old stripes underneath. Measure all your stripes width at widest point. You may want to order 6" wide stripes. I used 4" and fid a lot of piecing together. But, it looks great 3 feet away and even better going down the road.
Also the stripes should hold up for 7-10 years.

Also, cost around $125.00

Thanks for the info. It’s pretty encouraging to hear of your approach.

My stripes are all pretty much straight which should help. Some of the stripes have shrunk in width plus are severely cracked in places.

Badboy. How are your stripes holding up. Did you end up clear coating? I've begun the process!

Painting over Cracked Decals

Howdy! I have been offline for a while but I also have "tested" the paint over process last year. I took one of my decals (gold in color) on my 2015 Win Vista that had cracked from its years in the Texas and now Arizona sun. I washed, taped, then light sanded the decal, then washed again. Then used Krylon spray paint from WalMart.

Its now been nearly a year and after full year of Arizona sun on it, it looks GREAT!

May is my target for doing the rest of the decals and then doing the ZEP covering over all of it.

The light sanding (very fine paper) was helpful to getting the paint to bond.

No need to scrape off old decals and go through that. Prepare the surface of the decal well (clean and roughed a bit) and it will come out well.

I shared in other thread The Coating Store if someone wanted to use great priced Urathane auto paint. Prices were better than we paid 30yrs ago on Enamel paint from body shop supply.

Completed painting over decals

Finished up last weekend. Actually happy with the results, and now we will see their life span! We sprayed the copper and rolled on the black.

there is a trend here on the west coast, where historically alot of trends start. all decals are removed, leaving a solid white finish. white and chrome...seems to be getting popular in the southwest with the boating/offroad crowd.
