Hey Larry, word is the examiners in Philly can be stinkers and require a class B driver to drive the rig to the test. That is why I went to Hazelton. Maybe call Philly to ask?

There is a user on here named steinjef if I recall correctly, who can give you a lot more info. It sounds like he is a penndot driver license examiner. It might be worthwhile looking him up and shooting him a message.

Jeff is not on much. He recently retired and went fulltime. His last entry on this thread gave a contact in the Hazelton office that can help.
Here is what Jeff provided:
"Just call the Hazlelton driver license center, they will be happy to help you.
570-459-3918. Bernie is the District Manager."

Yeah, I tried to get a hold of Jeff many different ways, but he never responded.
I'm going to try the local barracks around me (Trevose) because they do a lot of CDLs and seemed very helpful when I stopped in.

Yeah, he is no longer in position to help. I would call Bernie.

I got really busy and didn't have time to pursue it any further. I'll study up over the holiday and go for the written early December. Probably will take the drivers test right after that.

I did not have to take a written test. Has the process changed since July?

There is no written test in PA. Just a driving skills (road) test.

Yeah, I tried mentioning that today to the people down at the Trevose barracks just north of Phila. Apparently the regulations seem a little flexible, as they told me that anything to do with getting a CDL there requires a written test as well. It is just to get your permit and for the Class B license it only covered chapters 2 & 3. I said ok and spent the 20 minute waiting period studying. Passed it no problem, so now all I have to do is ride out the waiting period (12/10/14) and then go take the road test. I have my permit.

Remind them that it is NOT a class B CDL, The license needed is a class B "Non-commercial" license.
It is a bit confusing not only to us, but also to the license centers.
To get my permit, i filled out a form, paid my $5 and got it on the spot.
To get my license, i made an appointment, showed up and took a drivers test around the industrial complex. I DID have to do a safety check around the MH. Checking lights, blinkers, etc. While not part of the pass/fail, we did talk about the procedures to test the air brakes.
I received my class B endorsement on the spot.

BTW...congratulations on getting the permit..

Maybe I should just go for the skills test in the MH and get the Class B CDL? All I have to do is that seeing as how I passed the test.

CDL requires annual DOT physical me thinks, and of no practical use unless you need a driving job. Eh?
