In getting back to the original posters question I think cutting them off at the knees is the best bet. Club them at the knees and then they fall and then you can beat the living you know what out of themů

Profile does not say where you live, where I live an ASP requires a training certificate just like your handcuffs, and all other devices. An asp would require a CCW permit since it can be a concealed weapon by legal definition. going to Canada I will leave all my work items home and carry two "Bear spray deterrents" Canada does not seem to question if you are worried about running into bears or other two legged varmints.

Carrying a Police Baton, Nunchucks, or the collapsible ASP is a felony in most states, if you are not a sworn Officer, or have a CCW permit for those weapons. The difference between ASPs,Batons, Nunchuks, and guns when dealing with laws, is Guns are/can be used for many things, and one of your Constitutional rights to own and possess. The other weapons only purpose is to use against someone in a fight and are considered a "deadly Weapon." There is no Constitutional Right to own one. In California it is Penal Code 12020. In most States those weapons can only be purchased in a Police Supply Store, with accredited Police Identification. If you are caught being in possession of a Police Nunchuk, Baton, or ASP you will most likely be arrested for a Felony violation, and all the stories in the world you make up will only dig your hole deeper. The Officers are not stupid and will know why you are carrying it. So if it is legal in your State(which I doubt)to carry/possess one I wouldn't bring it with you in other States, as you may be getting yourself in trouble. And it never looks good in a "Self Defense" defense in Court when you are carrying an Illegal Weapon into the fight.

In self defense you can only continue your defensive actions until the threat of bodily harm against you has stopped. If you continue when the threat no longer exists, or the person has retreated, you are only putting yourself in a possibility of a Criminal Liability on your part not to mention the potential Civil liability. It all sounds like fun and games until you have to take action and then deal with the aftermath, even when your original actions were right at the time. The best bet is to avoid it the best you can and then do what is prudent for the situation if you ultimately have to defend yourself. Comments like this wouldn't bode well for you if you were in Criminal or Civil Court defending yourself, so be careful.
