Does my 32 gal (in an open basement bay)built in propane tank need to be re-certified at 10 years old from date of manufacture? My trailer had to re-cert the 30 lb tanks (portable) a few years back.

No. Built in horizontal tanks do not have to be re-certified. Be aware, however, that if you let it get rusty and ugly looking, you might have a hard time getting it filled. Any propane dealer has the right to refuse to fill any tank he believes may be unsafe.

Keep it relatively clean and keep a coat of paint on it, you'll be fine.

Thanks Bob, I was'nt sure about this type of tank. I haven't had to fill it yet but its getting on the low side. My BBQ 20 lber's are empty and I need to fire the barbie up tonight. The RV tank is well protected and in good shape, clean no rust, so a trip with the RV for all the refills shouldn't have a surprise (awe crap $) for me.

Don't be surprised if the LP fill jockey tries to tell you it needs a re-cert. They often have not had the difference of portable (DOT spec) vs fixed (ASME spec) explained. Just insist he contact his boss to learn more, or go somewhere else.

I can't speak to the rules outside the US, but I have found that a clean tank with a nice coat of paint does go a long way toward assauging any undue concerns on this side of the border. In fact, my 15 year old tank has never even been questioned.

I think the Canada rules still distinguish by both type and size. The 10 year re-cert in Canada applies to "cylinders" of 40 lb or less. I believe that "cylinders" refers to the same thing the US DOT calls a "bottle", i.e. a portable LP container. Fixed tanks conforming to ASME specs and have a different certification requirement. Generally, ASME tanks do not require recertifications, but check with provincial authorities tobe sure.

I am in Canada and my 1999 Triple E has not been recertified. I have no issues getting it filled.

I live in Ottawa Ontario Canada and built in tanks needs to be certified every 5 years or they will not fill them at most filling stations. In Quebec is a different story as many rules on many subject, rules and laws is often not treated the same.
As said on previous post a nice painted tank goes a long way than a rusty looking one.

Correct, only the DOT containers need to be recertified, but some places will overlook the recert date if the tanks are well maintained. Looks can seduce even propane jockeys.
