We are going to Alaska this year, God Willing. I saw a picture of a gas motorhome that had used bubble wrap to protect the from of their rig. Two questions. What would you use to hold the bubble wrap onto the front of the rig that would allow it to stay on but not damage paint when removed? Second, do you think this protection is even needed? Several people have told my wife that they knew of many people who had damaged their rigs traveling to Alaska and now she is very concerned.

When my Father-in-law took his trailer to Alaska, he attached carpet to the front of it to catch all of the debris. It had a couple of convient clips to hang the carpet from and it was stiff enough it did not need a lot of support.

I don't know how much good bubble wrap would do against a sharp rock. Sometihng like carpet would stop a rock.

We lived in Alaska for 18 years, still travel there every year, and have dirven the Alcan highway. Forget that stuff. Last time I drove it, not one scratch, nick, or windshield chip, until I got to Washington State. A truck on the interstate threw up a rock and put a chip in the windshield. All you have to do is use some common sense, slow down a little, and allow a little extra following distance. And oh, buy the Milepost Magazine, I think they come out in March. That way you can follow along and know what you are looking at and where the next gas station should be. Don't leave before June 1 or you will most certainly get caught in ice or snow....

Ben & Bonita: G'morning from Tampa. We have to agree with Mike(ie., Mike Thomas/post above). Ya really don't have to worry about covering the front end of your rig. We took our new 06 Mtn. Aire all over Yukon and Alaska in 07 with no front end damage, although we did get a small chip in windshield thrown by fast moving, on coming fuel truck flying down the hyw. DO, on the other hand, cover your Jeep's windshield and either remove or tie up any low hanging mudflap ya might have on rear of rig. Ya know, those long ones with the manufacturers name. Those things WILL kick up and shower your toad with gravel. Have a GREAT TRIP!!! We'll be going back soon. Steve & Lynette

Thanks for the info guys. My wife now is not as worried about the rig getting harmed.

I JUST CAN'T WAIT FOR THIS TRIP!!!!!!! I am so afraid something will happen and we will not get to go. We will be traveling with 2 other rigs, crossing into Canada about June 1st and crossing back into US about end of Aug. Since we are all Fulltimers, we can stay as long as we want.

Here's something you might consider even if you're not going to Alaska but want to protect the front end from chips & scratches.

A friend of mine had the lower half of the nose on his MH covered with "Rhino lining", the stuff sprayed in pick up beds. He had it done in black but the guy at the shop said he can mix any color needed. He sprays it on thiner than in a pick up bed. He's had it on for three years now and it still looks like new.

I'm guessing any Rhino spray shop will be able to mix the colors. Check your local area shops.

Ben & Bonita:

Ya know, I get the same twinge of excitement just reading your posts about your upcoming trip. You're about to have one heck of a great experience!!

I see you're out of TN, and was wondering which route you're planning? Where are ya crossing into Canada?

Don't forget to pick up some basic gold panning stuff before ya start up the Alaska Hwy. Talking to other campers and/or locals along the way, you'll find many special places to do some panning...and it's a HOOT!! It really ties ya to the land you'll be passing through.

If ya have any other questions, drop a PM and we'll try to provide some ideas. Have a WONDERFUL time, and, DON'T HURRY...just puttz along. Steve & Lynette

Went to Alaska a couple of years ago. GREAT TRIP. Do a search for Transit Sheild. It applies to wherever you want and comes off easily. It is used on new cars when being transported across country by truck. Be sure to protect your lights, both on the rig and on your toad. The damage we had was inflicted by a yahoo going too fast on a gravel road, coming at us spitting up gravel, chipped the windshield on the rig and cracked it on the toad. Other than thet, slow down, relax and enjoy the ride. You will love it.

Steve & Lynette,

We are leaving Milan, TN about May 1st, then will be meeting one of the couples traveling with us in Hutchinson, KS at the NKK Region 3 Rally.

We will then meet the third couple, who will be first traveling the west coast, in Washington state somewhere, and then cross over at Osoyoos, BC around June 1st. We will then travel up the Western route to Dawson Creek, BC.

On the return back to U.S., we will take the Eastern Route from Dawson Creek and then go to Glacier NP about the end of Aug.

All three couples of us are very outgoing, so we will be talking with a lot of people to get local info.

Had not thought about gold panning, will definitely give that a try. Maybe I can find enough gold to buy us a new 2010 King Aire when we return. LOL. We plan to do some fishing and just take our time and enjoy the place.

We had to give up fulltiming this winter to help my mother move into an assisted living facility and get her settled in. This trip will get us back on the road.

I have heard many talk about the Yahoo's they meet coming towards then driving fast that causes the most damage.

If I have any question, I will definitely PM you.

Thanks
Ben

Ben & Bonita,
Hope you all have a great trip to Alaska and please let us know the outcome. We are heading to Alaska in 2010 for our 50th Anniversary and any info you could pass on would be greatly appreciated. We will be entering Canada and going to Lake Louise and Calgary first before going to Dawson Creek.

We are towing a '98 Honda on a tow dolly and hope we don't get too many dings but probably will. I have a Rock Solid guard on rear of RV and was thinking of adding the brush in back of it for added protection.

Well anyway enjoy the trip!

Ben....We want to do the trip in 2011 when I retire. One of my plans was to use the blue painter's tape around the wheel wells and replace it every few days.

We're leaving for Alaska about May 15th. We'll drive to Rapid City, SD where our son and his kids live and stay there for 4 or 5 days. Last time we RV'd there we stayed at the Ellsworth AFB Famcamp. It's nice and inexpensive, but barren and very often quite windy. This time we're planning on staying at one of the CG's in Spearfish...someplace with a pool and a place to pitch a tent for the grandskids. Then it's off to AK via Glacier, Banff and the Icefields Pkwy. Not planning on getting back to Tn until August 1st or so. Cannot hardly wait for this trip.

Bob

Pick up a couple of windshield repair kits from Walmart ($9.95). Great for repairing chips. Comes with COMPLETE instructions.

Just a short note: Don't forget to fill your tanks on the US-side (Diesel / Gas - whatever your needs are)... Diff. pays for a night of camping!!!?
