Hello Fellow Rvrs,
What are your thoughts on Recap tires on a class A?
I have a 2001 34' Damon Challenger. It weighs around 17,600 lbs empty.
This unit had these new looking mudder recaps on it when I bought it.
I have been from NY to Fl, & back with them.
Someone told me they may fail. Plus if they do, it can take out a lot of wiring etc.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

They can do more damage than the money saved by buying them instead of new tires.
See all those alligator tire treads on the highway? RE-CAPS.

I would replace them. You see re-caps up and down the road that have failed. Could do a lot of damage. If you think about it people replace RV tires all the time, that look new and have plenty of thread because of age. How you have re-cap that you don't know how old the original tire is, but had to be re-caped because the thread was wore off.

Using recaps is a very dangerous choice. If you look at all the black rubber alligators along the road they are from trucks. They don't do much damage to a semi trailer but if one starts to peel off on a motorhome you are in some deep do do. That cap will destroy your wheel well and who knows what else by the time you pull over. I came from the trucking industry and there are proper applications for recaps and using them on a motorhome is very foolish.

Recaps on the front wheels is a very very very bad idea as if you loose the cap you can also loose everything else.

Recaps on the rear is a bad idea as if you loose the cap it can tear out electrical and plumbing lines that run for some very stupid (in my not very humble opnion) through the wheel well.

So Recaps on a class A.. not a good idea

I would never run recaps on a Motorhome. Safety, collateral damage should one fail, etc.

Do not put re caps on your RV. I will not use them on our old grain trucks on the farm. In my trucking years I worked for a cheap skate for a while. He only bought re caps. I blew more tires in that year than I ever have before.

While I was having some painting done on my MH two MH's came in with damage. Both MH had Recaps! 1st MH had Front Left Tire blow. Damage to MH was over $10,000.00 that was the least expensive. 2nd Mh had right rear tire blow. Tore off two basement doors, plus molded fender thingy around the tire. That one part, New from factory was $4795.00. , But factory no longer had the mold (2005 model yr). So corvette glass technician wanted the same 4795 to repair and fit broken unit. Then the 2 doors had to be made by local alum factory in Tampa area for 2200 bucks each. did I mention that they had to be installed, painted and blend the paint up on the side of the MH. was told by adjuster that total claim was over $15,000 time it was completed. Damage happened in MAY 2013 and they should have it fixed by November. do you really want to take a chance on recaps? anyone mention SAFTEY, yours and anyone riding with you. Safe travels... ed

Thanks for all responds. I am putting 4 new on rear. the fronts were new last fall.

I will run recaps on a trailer but not on my MH.

Yeah what they all said, ReCap bad

I had new radials loose their thread, looked just like recaps on a new TT. 1 tire did $2k worth of damage, and we are talking about a 25' TT. Just imagine a $100K MH

My Coach is currently in the Body shop being fixed due to a blown tire. The repair Cost: $19,600.00. I had excellent tires, but hit something in the road.
I wouldn't try it on a Re-cap. Your just asking for trouble.
