Hi all you traveling folks.

Hubby and I are heading out to Ca. and wanted to know if you can travel with a 34' motorhome diesel pusher with a tow dolly along Hwy 101 from Crescent City to Orick? We are getting mixed messages regarding this route. Would appreciate some input.

In 2002 we drove that route south to Eureka and then, on SR-299 to Redding. We were in a 34 footer pulling a toad. Beautiful scenery - SR-299 is a mountainous road for sure, but one of the most scenic roads we have traveled. US-101 south to Eureka was fine.

We have driven hwy 101 two times. First was going north in a 38 foot motorhome and the second time going south in a 41 foot motorhome, booth times towing a Honda CR-V. We even took some side roads trips in the motorhomes. Just drive slow and enjoy the scenery.

We had no problem taking our 38' w/17' pkup from Newport OR down to just above SF.

We've done that with a 40' Allegro Bus pulling a Jeep Wrangler without any issues. 101 is a good road. If you get off and go through the Avenue of the Giants forest south of Eureka I'd recommend taking the toad. It get's tight in there. If you want pics of that area check out This Link. There's plenmty of places to pull over and unhook the toad if you are just driving by. Fern Canyon is a really neat state park. Don't take the RV there because it won't fit but you can drop it off at the entrance and take the toad in. You'll cross through the forest by winding over a huge ridge that drops you down at sea level behind a large bluff. You can drive along the shore where Roosevelt Elk herds are. Follow the road to the end and you'll see the Fern Canyon parking area. Walk into the canyon, which is part of where Jurassic Park II was filmed. It's a very scenic area. 101 is a good road until you get down by Garberville. Then it gets very narrow and twisty as it winds it's way through the redwoods there. It's illegal to take any motorhome or bus over 40' through there. In some spots the two lane blacktop splits to straddle a redwood tree with one lane going on each side.

Mark, I love your photos and comentary. I have read your web site two or three times, it is great! My wife and I are planning to travel the Northwest Quadrant of U.S.A. in 3 years(when she retires). I am going to print out your ENTIRE WEB SITE and use it for our guide!

You will have absolutely no difficulty traveling Hwy 101 in California. When you get down to the Humbolt Redwoods, south of Eureka, take time to travel on the 'old hwy', now known as the "Avenue of the Giants." You'll have to slow down, since it is a scenic roadway, but the size of your MH will not be a problem.

Traveled and have lived in the area your talking about. Highway is great for MH. Trip will be fun and enjoyable. Many great sights and views. One area just south of Cresent City your high on the mountain, big trees all around and to the west the ocean way down the hill. Neat views. Go slow and enjoy the views and sights.
