Registration question.

I currently live in Hawaii but going to buy a RV on the mainland. Any idea on how I can register the coach in a state that I'm not a resident? The RV will never be in Hawaii and they won't let me register it without it being here.

Some people have set up LLCs in Montana, or South Dakota and register their RVs there. You will surely get plenty of opinions on doing this. But it's done all the time.

Why those two states? Sorry I'm new and not sure why one state is better over the other besides taxes

I was just naming a couple of states where I've seen this done. I'm sure you can do this in most states too.

I'm not really sure, I'm retired military and was planning to just keep it on military bases and come back wherever I decide to leave it.

I'm thinking that a Montana LLC would work perfectly in your situation considering that you are not planning on becoming a resident of any of the mainland states and will someday go back to Hawaii.

I'd talk to Duncan McMullin (or any of the attorneys) at Bennett Law in Missoula. Duncan is who we use and he's an exceptionally nice guy. They are experts and the most prominent advisors in the RV registration and the ins-and-outs as it pertains to using a Montana LLC to register vehicles. He/they can at least give you free advice initially on whether it would work in your situation. You don't have to use Bennett for advice but just a suggestion.

With a Montana LLC, you can keep your Hawaii drivers' license and residency. I believe using South Dakota or Escapees in Texas would entail becoming a resident of South Dakota or Texas. South Dakota and Texas are what many full-timers use. If you are planning to be full-time and not returning to Hawaii for many years, then using South Dakota or Texas as your state of domicile makes sense. If you are going to temporarily be full-timing on the mainland and wish to keep your Hawaii drivers' license, then it might be beneficial to look at using a Montana LLC.

There are lots of anti-Montana LLC and naysayers here on this forum but Montana LLCs can legally be used by many under the right situations without all the arguments of "cheating your home state out of taxes" and "being a criminal and scofflaw" for using one because they think we are "criminally evading taxes." Your situation seems like an ideal situation to use one without any reason to use those arguments, however.

What's a ballpark price for setting up an LLC in Montana and what are the yearly fees to maintain it?
