Rexhall Generac problem. Advice please.

Just got a 2000 rexhall clipper. Has a Generac generator. The generator runs fine. When I start it and all the systems come on inside everything works for about 10 seconds then shuts off. Now the generator doesn't stop just everything losses power. Then it stays off for prob 20 seconds then comes back on. Keeps doing this. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks.

First we need to define your meaning of "systems". Are you referring to all the 12v lights inside or only the 120v appliances such as the microwave?

Just the 120v items. All 12 still works.

Well, lets start with monitoring the INPUT voltage at the transfer switch itself on the side coming from the genset. Not knowing your skill level are you comfortable removing the cover to the transfer switch and using a voltmeter? If so I would want to monitor that voltage to see if the generator is actually dropping out or if we need to look further down the line such as through the transfer switch and perhaps even further up to the main breaker box and/or the energy management system (if so equipped).

Oh yeah I'm able to do that. Actually have the distribution panel out now. Gonna check some things and will let you know. Thanks

Thats fine.. but I'd start right at the transfer switch itself first before I tested at the main/distribution panel.... it's entirely possible the genset output itself is dropping.

Also look to see if you have an EMS system that controls load shedding of various 120v devices...... It will be in the main/distribution panel also - very easily determined as the HOT of each device that could be shed will each be on a seperate connection point through the EMS board itself.

I think I may have found the issue. Once I got the distribution box out and started the generator I noticed that the line/generator switch would click about 10 seconds after starting generator. That's when the 120v stuff stopped working. Just a bit later it would click again then the 120v stuff was working again. Bad switch maybe? It seems to work fine plugged into shore power.

Well.... maybe.. did you meter the inbound lines to the transfer switch coming from the genset? I wanted to see if the generator is actually losing power which will cause the transfer switch to transfer back to shore side. Remember.. there are most likely 2 seperate 120volt coils in the transfer switch... one for each side.

Ok. Then genset stop putting out but keeps running. Then after about 20 seconds it starts putting out again.

Yep, right on.

Remove the cover.. find the voltage regulator.. should be black in color, rectangular 4 or 5" or so. Meter on pins/leads 0 and 4. You should see 12VDC when its running. Keep the leads connected and see if you ever lose 12VDC when your 120vac drops.

If you do lose 12vdc then that will be the cause for the loss of AC power. This 12vdc is being produced by the rotor through the brushes and powers the quadrature etc etc - we can then turn our attention to the brush holder, slip rings and brushes themselves.

If you are losing 120vac (which you can meter on pins/leads 2 & 6) and not losing 12vdc at pins/leads 0 & 4 then your voltage regulator is bad. Here is a replacement: 92234 / 0922340SRV Generac Generator Control Board 092234 : A.S.A.P.

Additionally.. while metering pay attention to how much fluctiation you are getting from either the 12v or 120 side of things. For example.. if the brushes are worn or slip rings are terribly dirty the DC voltage can vary wildly, which in turn affects the AC voltage from the quad. IF the DC is stable and your AC is wildly fluctuating then I suspect you're going to be buying a voltage regulator.
