RidX and a number of other such brand names all contain the same thing, enzymes that break down solid wastes, including toilet paper. It begins to work within 24 hours and in 3 days is at full strength/population, hard at work. Sure our holding tanks are not septic tanks, but the effect is the same, it liquefies everything organic in the tank.
I've been using RidX for ~25 years now, and see no reason to quit.
The real secret to successfully maintaining the black tank is using plenty of flushing water. That is hard to do when boondocking, so treating with an enzyme product is quite helpful.

We did a RidX treatment to our black tank which helped, but I find get the best results from back flushing my black tank with fresh water each time I dump. I have a hose connection that I hook up when we arrive with an old hose that fills the black tank near the top for the back flush.

I use a generic bacteria/enzyme culture, I do not know if it is the same as RidX.
When it was 1st given to us to try at work (grease traps) I had to try it at home in the septic tank, went away for the weekend, Monday clean as waste water can be (looked like clean water but could not get DW to try it

)

I use water, a built in back-flush system at each dump, and any product w/coconut oil once or twice a year to lube the dump valves. Never felt (or smelled) a need to use additives otherwise.

When we first moved into the S&B they had to pump out the septic system. It was in the contract that they do that for us to buy it. We asked the guys if what if anything we should use in the tank .... their response "If you want to use anything go ahead but you will just have us out here faster than we should be. With the size tank you have you should only have us out here about once every 5 to 7 years but with using anything we will have to be out here more often especially if you are gonna use that RidX stuff."

Daddy was a certified plumber and swore to his dying day that Rid-X was the worst thing you could put into a septic system.

That said, Rid-X does "jumpstart" the bacterial process(s) needed to break down the wastes in a black tank. It does what it's supposed to do... It just isn't the best resort in a residential application because it causes a build-up of sludge in the bottom of a septic tank.

I doubt that is of any comfort to those campgrounds where you dump, though.
