Roadside Assistance question

I have been RV' ing in my Motor Home for the past 10 years. The question I have is the Pros and Cons you experienced and recommendations on Roadside Services. I had AAA plus and when I needed them I had major issues of them not responding. I changed to Good Sams and when I separated the tire bead from the tire they replaced a perfectly good tire at the cost of $1100. To my objections. Any Comments?

AAA covers RVs in sone states but not in others. even in the states where coverage is available it is likely up to you to find and pay for service and then seek reimbursement.

as fir GS the cost if the tire is not included in the service plan and likely not in anyone’s service plan. the cost? you were in a tough spot and i feel your pain...truly i do. but you didn’t buy the tire from GS. you bought it from whomever handled your service call. take it up with them, write to the Motor Home magazine ‘Hot Line’ for help, seek legal advice or chalk it up to experience.

I can not speak to the road side all though I have it I have not had the need to use it to this point. On the tire if you objected they really had no right to change it. Even if they felt the tire had been damaged they do not have the right to change with out authorization.

I have had Coach Net for years. They're not perfect though. My vehicle insurance renewal came in and it has roadside assistance is included. Need to check and see what it covers or doesn't.

With AAA, it could be a number of providers in the area you were in. You're at the mercy of the service providers that the roadside service contracts with. I've heard more war stories about AAA than the other 2 big names (Good Sam & CoachNet).

For the situation of replacing a good tire, your beef isn't with Good Sam as it is with the provider they dispatched. They could have just as easily been dispatched by CoachNet (or AAA).

So what to do? Pick a provider other than AAA and hope for the best. :(

not sure what your beef is. roadside service is designed to provide you with a mobile tech to diagnose and possibly fix the issue. some plans include some services like a lockout, bringing you a small amount of gas, towing you to a sevice ship or changing a flat or damaged tire with YOUR spare. the membership fee typically covers a tech with a truck for X-hrs. most any part they need to get you going is extra. you are free to refuse the service if you disagree with the proposed repair or cost but then your options dwindle. best advice is to compare plans with what is and is not covered before proceding. me? we’ve had GS for 32-yrs now with no plans to change.

related question on roadside assistance

Hit a small bolt, punctured new Michelin 22.5 in tire, immediate pressure loss. Safely got to roadside 2 days ago at 1030pm and into a parking lot nearby. Within 90 minutes Good Sam roadside had a new matching Michelin tire on my RV in the parking lot. However, it cost me $926 for one tire. I am wondering now whether or not I would have been better off waiting until morning and calling around for a service center and getting a tire brought out to me. Has anyone compared the price you get the tire for (I realize it was a late night call) through emergency roadside assistance vs just calling around to tire shops yourself and arranging for someone to come out and replace it??? Not sure I saved anything. I ended up boondocking in the parking lot anyway because it was so late. Real experiences with comparisons would be appreciated. Thanks

It’s true the roadside brings the “guy” to you for your membership ..and will dismount and mount a wheel and tire you already have The same guy who you could call yourself if you knew the area etc. good Sam or any other service pays them less than the going rate for arranging the call so they show up already feeling THEY got taken.
Doesn’t apply to the coach but the car trailer I pull had a flat and they wanted double the price for a tire and mounting was like 75 bucks about 300 all in .. the service guy wanted a cc number before they came out 75 miles
No thanks pulled out the car and drove to the nearest town .. 80 bucks mounted and balance. Now you can’t do that with a 22.5 wheel very easily
I keep the service if I’m in a pinch but I also look at all the options before I call. Calling local shops first if your in a safe place can’t hurt

last year in AZ we needed to have two XRV 255/80R-G 22.5 michelins replaced. they were in really bad shape (another story for another time but we were very lucky to arrive safely in AZ) and i didn't want to chance driving the MH to the shop so they came to me (Purcell Tire). total bill...tires, labor, tax, service call...$1507.

We have been with GS Roadside Assistance since 2001. We had a couple of really bad experiences with them, but I think that happens with all the services.

We will be changing to FMCA when it comes up for renewal again!

Had GS about 3 years ago. Blew a tire on the trailer. The person at GS couldn't locate us on the Penn TPK even though I told them we were near Somerset. English was definitely not her native language - communication was very difficult. Three hours later, a service truck arrived without notice from GS and we were on our way 40 minutes after that.

After that incident, I switched to Coach.Net. My first question to them before I signed up was "Where is your call center located?" It is located in the U.S. I called their roadside assistance number and had no problem communicating. I realize that this is anecdotal, but thought you would like to know.

used the fire out of them for trailer tire changes


my insurance also has roadside coverage, but it is very limited on the RV towing, but can be used in concert with other services.
i am not aware of any that actually cover the cost of a new tire, only removal of tire and replacement of built up replacement .


i dont any issues with coachnet,

them combined with F/L 800 service are great

A couple years ago I had my first flat on an RV. Called Les Schwab, service truck was there quickly. Patched the tire and charged me $45. Luckily Les Schwab was only a mile away and the truck and tech were available right then. I have Coach Net but didn't even call them.
