Ron, be sure to pin the roller tube ends to the axle to prevent the springs from turning. At the end of each end cap on the tube is a slot or hole that when algined with the hole in the axle a pin, cotter pin or finishing nail can be pushed through.
I suggest you extend the room all the way out. Unroll the fabric a little more to pin it and then remove bracket from awning end cap or hex-rod from wall bracket. Make your repairs and then reattach the topper to mounting brackets. Remove pins and you are done.
