Most likely a fuel leak, sprayed on hot engine, and there you go.
Sad to see this, always a sad thing. Glad all people (and possibly pets) are OK.

Looks like some fire? at the top of the drivers window also, seems weird.

The picture didn't repost.

I am thinking the driverís window is open and you are seeing smoke exiting it.

I won't guess as to cause. However, by the layout and color scheme that is a 2002 Winnebago Journey DL, model 39QD. Per the brochure, that model came standard with Freightliner, Cat 7.2 at 330 hp, Allison 3000MH, rear radiator. I could be mistaken, but the thing that looks like a radiator grille on the side at the rear usually covers a basement air-conditioning system on these Winnies.

It's always sad to see a vehicle fire, especially an RV, as that was someone's home, too.

That is a Winnebago Journey and the grill on that side is the dash air conditioner condenser all those models have a rear rad. I wouldn't even take a guess as to what happened with the one picture shown. The fire has traveled to the interior so there wouldn't be much left.

Not sure what model it is but wonder if it had a full rock guard on it.

I worked in underground mines +35 years on/off and had exposure to lots of heavy equipment. From experience these could be some of the causes
  1. Turbo failure causes excessive heat, also has oil lube which contributes to the fire so it spreads fast and is pretty much instantaneous.
  2. Fuel leak, although diesel has a fairly low flash point it will cause a fire.
  3. Hydraulic leak, hose breaking or coming loose spraying oil on everything.
  4. Electrical short that catches oil residue build up on fire.
We installed Fire Suppression Systems on all large pieces of equipment. Seen it save many rigs but also have seen several that were a complete loss. Cheap insurance considering the cost of some of the equipment is $1-2M.
