Trying to decide who to go with for insurance on my MH ('07 Hurricane 34b). I currently have State Farm and am thinking of switching. When I purchased my MH I just added it on my current policy for my other auto's. With travel season coming up I've been trying to get my ducks in a row and want to make sure I have the right coverage. I'm still kinda new to this stuff and am looking for some info.

Who does everyone use and why did you go with them? Thanks for any info or suggestions ahead of time.

I would go with Progressive or GMAC. Both have special RV insurance that takes into account the specifics of RV's and in your case, motorhome.

I've had both and presently have GMAC through Good Sam. I like the Good Sam GMAC because when the moho is in storage you can "Suspend" the Liability portion and save quite abit of money, at least if you keep it in storage very much. It doesn't actually need to be in storage but just parked off public roads. For example we have ours parked next to our home in Colorado and then in the winter we go to our lot in Texas and spend about 5 or 6 months there. While it's parked on our lot, even though we live in it we suspend the liability. All the comprehensive is still covered. With this setup our coverage costs are more then cut in half.

I would also recommend RV specific insurance. We are with Progressive, one nice thing, that I hope I never have to take advantage of, is the replacement coverage. If your RV is stolen or totaled, they will replace it with a brand new same or comparable model. Most insurance coverage will only provide the depreciated value at the time of the loss. On top of this, it's much cheaper than State Farm, even with this replacement coverage. I actually have everything else I own insured with State Farm, after reviewing my Progressive coverage, my State Farm agent suggested I stay with Progressive for the motorhome. Good luck!

We also have GMAC for all the above stated reasons. Have had them five years with no claims so far.

Consider calling Farm & City at 800-331-1520. They are an RV specialist insurance broker. They will look at several companies for you. Progressive is the one of the companies they represent.

Dito on GMAC, I did what you did when I got my first MH and just added to my car policy. When I took the time to check GMAC was more than 50% lower than the rate I was paying by adding it to the car policy.

GMAC is worth looking at. For whatever reason they do not want business in my zip code. I had GMAC for years. Upon renewal in 2006 they almost doubled my premium (for no reason). I went with Progressive via Farm and City.

To date, GMAC is good for all the free gifts I get for responding to their junk mail. They remain almost double the cost of Progressive. It amazes me as to why they continue to solicit business in my zip code when they are way out of line with their price.

On edit: Today I got more junk mail from GMAC/Good Sam. The letter mentioned me, by name.

It said I had called before and their quote was too high and to call back because they had lowered their rates. So I called and the quote was within $50 of the quote I got in April. Progressive is $1131. GMAC was $1969.

At least I get a new screw driver set,,, in 6 to 8 weeks. The set even has a magnetic tip!

You may wish to check any company you are thinking about insuring with thru A.M. Best . We down here in Florida know and understand that some pay

and some don't

. Go with the better rated company. On a personal level, we just renewed with Progressive.

I don't know how old you are, but I just hit 50 and was shopping for fulltimers insurance for the RV and new toad as well. I got an incredible price using AARP. They have set up a deal with the Hartford that is MH specific, and can add fulltimers insurance as well (which is like a homeowners policy for your rig).

Give em a look if you are old enough!

Progressive works for me. Stacking on your automobile policy can get pricey especially if you tow and both vehicles get damaged. If you have stacked coverage you could end up with only partial coverage and have to pay for more out of pocket on the repairs while unstacking the policy will cost you extra in premiums.

been with gmac for 6 yrs. paying 2600.00 per yr. for our motor home, 05 dakota 4x4 and a 05 durango. had 1 claim. plugged into some bad power in fla. a couple of yrs. ago, did about 3500.00 in damage. had a check within 1 week!
nothing but good to say about them. jim
