Post Sequence to open our safe

I purchased a 1997 Gulf Stream Tour Master and haven't figured out how to open the safe. I have the combination but need the right-left-right sequence & number of turns.

Most combination locks start with a turn to the right - actually, you usually start with 2 or 3 turns to the right to make sure you pick up all the discs inside the lock before stopping at the first number. If that doesn't work, try the same sequence except starting with several turns to the left.

Hi - try three complete turns to the right, stop at the first number, then one turn to the left back past that number, then stop when the second number comes around, then turn right and stop on the third number.

Good luck!

Well, I remember just the opposite for most mosler type safes.
Let's assume 10, 20, 30 as the numbers
Turn the dial to the left at least 3 times and stop on the first number 10;
Turn the dial to the right and go PAST the second number 20 two times and stop on 20 the third time;
Turn the dial to the left, past the 3rd number once, and stop at the 3rd number 30 on the second time;

Turn the dial to the right to 0(zero) and then a little past it and the dial should detente stop.

Open safe.

Edited: I just found this that reinforces my method:

A picture is worth how many words?

I'ts like counting cadence LEFT RIGHT LEFT RIGHT

I agree with Wayne that turning to left is first. My safes all work that way.

Defeat clutched from the jaws of victory ... I thought the turn right past 0 for a fourth # was the missing link, but no luck. I guess it's time to suppose I don't have the correct combination and contact a locksmith.

try this...

First, is there a handle to open the lock after combo?

No?

Is it a 4 digit combo?

If no handle then there may be 2 marks instead of one, make sure you use the correct one, usually the one to the LEFT.

Why?

After the last digit you turn to the RIGHT and it activates the latch.

Which way to turn first?

Assume high school locker with 3 numbers, we always start to the right.

Same here, except we change directions for each number added.

So if 4 numbers, add one, so 3+1, change directions once, so start to the LEFT.

Next, turn past the FIRST number then amount of times as there are numbers, so if 4 numbers and first digit is 30, turn to the left 4 times past 30, stop on 30, then right past the next number three times and stop on it, left past then next twice and stop, then right past once and stop, left to last, then right to open.

Onother note, some of these are not reset by the owners, they come as 0-0-0-0, if this is the case, turn to the left 4 times then stop on 0, then right to open.

Good luck!

Also, if it is factory, try 25, 50, 25 0 for the four number set. That is the most common configuration of factory set numbers.

There are two marks. The mark on the left is for setting the combination once it is opened, and you have the key. (Typically a key inserts in a little hole on the back of the lock.)

Older styles you had to take the back off the lock and set it manually. Of course, that is useless information until it is open.

Edited:
Also, make sure you have a steady hand when you stop at a number. Use a finger, or thumb, of the hand that is not spinning the dial and apply just a little pressure to keep it from moving in any one direction unless you want it to move with the hand spinning the dial.

You must also be exactly on the number mark, give or take a very small fraction of a number, to have the tumblers align correctly. If the person who set the combination was off in any direction when the numbers were set you could have a problem in opening the safe. It is unlikely that they would be off on all three numbers, (0 is understood as the 4th number) but they could have been off on any of a single number. So try one "tick" mark on either side of a number. About 6 different combination (12 counting the original number)

It may be worth calling a locksmith. Make sure you tell them up front what you have and what you want them to do without destroying the safe.

Success at last

Gulf stream help center finally got back to me with the original combination and sequence.
Contrary to the seller (windowed) input the combination had never been changed from the factory setting.
The safe is a Safe-N-Secure brand and the sequence is R-L-R ... and is now OPEN

Thanks to everyone for their inputs.
