Slide out problems....

Good Evening All,

When we returned from our last trip out a couple of weeks ago, I put all four slides out in order to vacuum the carpet and wash the tile floor. I noticed that the larger slide on the driver's side was not going out smoothly like all the others. It was going in and out in a jerking motion and with each "jerk" it would make a banging sound...."bang, bang, bang...etc". I had a mechanic friend come over to the house...(he also Rv's) and he believes that it might be the slide out motor. I called a really great mobile RV repair guy and he wants to order a brand new motor because in his opinion, the motors are just not worth repairing, but should just be replaced.

Any opinions on what the odd behavior of the slide room might be and if it is the motor, is the repair tech correct and that it should just be replace...??

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Faith

First think to check is , to make sure the motor mount , and gearbox bolts are tight, I've had to help a neighbor with a problem with his slide when the bolts worked loose and broke the threaded bosses off the gear box housing. Check the area around each roller under the slide, for debris, chunks of broken tile were crushing under his rollers too, left over from a previous owners repair.

Did the mobile RV repair guy come out to look at the problem or did you just talk on the phone? I have heard of small objects falling into the slide path and causing problems. Didn't you have a water problem recently? Do you suppose some of the flooring has swelled or become warped due to that?

If its a Power Gear Motor, you can email their very capable techs who respond quickly. Their address is. info@powergearus.com . Give them as much information as you can.

Good luck and please update us.

It sounds like it is more of a gear problem or like the OP said something caught in the movement. If it is power gear motors they use a motor with reduction gears to move the slides. so i am wondering if the banging you hear could be the gears slipping or loose. The gear housing can be bought separately from the motor you might even be able to find yours on ebay. Let us know what you find out.

Before paying for anything I would get under the slideout and have someone else (wife/child) operate the slide. Find out where the noise is coming from, then you can troubleshoot properly. It sounds like something is binding to me, but it could be something as simple, like the tracks needing lube or a bad roller/bearing.
