Slide Topper Spring

I got a Care Free slide topper that is making a thumping sound in rhythm as the slide goes in and out. The topper is still retracting just fine, although I can see some slack in the tension as the slide moves in. When the slide is extended, the topper sags a little as well. I'm guessing I have a partially broken spring. I have replace the awnings in these toppers before, so I'm familiar with taking the roller off.

My question is: do these toppers have a coil spring in them, or is it a leaf type spring? Is there a kit sold to replace this springs, or am I just better off buying a new roller? Would CW sell the parts I need, or is there a site on line to order what ever it is I need?

If you've played with these topper before, I would appreciate your recommendation on how to fix this.

Thank you!

It sure sounds like a broken spring to me! It is a coil spring I believe, and you can get a replacement from Chris at Stone Vos.

Good luck, happy trails, and God bless!

Best place for Carefree awning parts is PPL motor homes online catalog.

Awning spring

Not difficult to change the spring but, try lubricating both ends of the awning shaft first. Mine gets as you describe once in awhile and lubing it does the trick.

If it is the Carefree SOK topper, the spring is in the left side as you look at the topper from outside. The other end is free-turning.
