This would be my first step. I replaced the topper on our mh a couple of years ago and if i remember right, it's spring loaded but still fairly easy to turn by hand.

Open the slide, climb up on a ladder, and try turning the awning roller. If you're at the front, rotate it counterclockwise to see if the awning fabric loosens and droops. If it does without too much effort, then there's something else going on.

Well, apparently I will be delayed with my findings on the slide topper because I found that the bottom to one of my storage compartments is gone, and this is not acceptable. Not to worry however, I have a plan.

Good info from everyone, sorry I took so long to get back to this.

Well, it took a while but I was up on the ladder with the slide out extended to where the top stopped and I found that it could not be turned by hand in either direction (I retracted the slide and I could turn the roll either way). So it looks like I will have to take at least one turn out of the spring.

Problem now is that the screws holding the topper roll to the bracket are frozen and I will have to drill them out.

Attempting today.

Ok, if anyone is still interested I took 2 full turns out of the topper spool and also had to make an alignment adjustment on the slide out rail mechanism, it was too low on the interior side.

Bottom line - works and seals just like new.
