If you purchase a vehicle in a state in which you do not live, you need to insist on the seller giving you a "trip ticket". This will allow you to not pay sales tax in the purchasing state and will give you time to get to your home state where you will pay your states sales tax. The dealer has to fill out a few more forms but it can be done.

I just purchased a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee, sales price in the low $40's in WA where the sales tax is 8.9%. The dealer gave me a 3 day trip ticket which would allow me to get out of WA and to my home state of SD. I drove it home and did the paperwork to register in SD.

We've done this twice now. We paid the sales tax in our home state, no tax in the state in which we purchased the rig. In both cases (and in different states) the dealer wrote a check to our home state DMV for the full amount of taxes and registration fees we'd owe. As soon as we got home we took that and the paperwork to one of our local DMV offices to complete the registration process and get our license plates/tags and title.

The sales tax is going to be collected by the state in which you register the RV as a condition of getting registration, title and tags. Sometimes the state in which you purchased the RV may require you to purchase a temporary "in transit" tag. We did not have to buy this in either case, one purchase in Florida, one in North Carolina, both registered in Wisconsin. (Although as I think about it, we just took the tags off our old motorhome/trade-in and put them on the new motorhome - our second out of state purchase)

Georgia has a 7% sales tax and a 6% up front advalorem tag tax.

If that's your official residence state, you don't have a choice.

Actually, both are combined into a single up-front tax of 6.5%. I believe it may go up to 7% next year, but it's still only one tax, not 2.

Our first out of state purchase was in Florida, albeit 17 years ago. We paid nothing to the state of Florida.

I'm wondering if you were working with someone that didn't know what they were doing, or was I?

If I had been in your shoes I'd have told them they'd have to discount the deal another 6% to offset, or I'm walking.

if you paid 6% in FL. And not a resident you have been had!! When purchasing from a dealer in Fl. You are given a temp tag to get you home. Their with the proper papers you pay whatever your place of residency requires. Maybe you should really check!!

Dealers sometimes do NOT know how to handle out of state purchases and even if you tell them how to do it they will still do what they want.
That is what happened this time in CA, told them we were registering it in MI with a MI address. 3 weeks later we get a call from them telling us our CA lic plates were being sent to MI. Because according to them even if you drive it just a day then you have to reg it in CA. That is not the case but too late now to do anything about it without going to court and that would cost more than just paying MI to re-reg it.

Yes I made many phone calls to the State of Florida and they said it doesn't matter if you are out of State or Canadian resident. If you purchase from any dealer right in Florida then you pay the tax. However if it would have been delivered to Georgia by the dealer and I pick up from there then I would have been exempt. I fought back and forth a long time with the dealer and the State Government......................Got nowhere. Other than out an extra $3,000.00.
I still think it is unfair and wrong. I can understand if I resided there then sure, pay.

Well, that rules out any future Florida purchases for us!

And now that you mention it, our Florida purchase was delivered to us in Wisconsin.

I tried but couldn't find RV regulations. I know that a boat purchased and removed from the State is not subject to tax.

http://dor.myflorida.com/dor/forms/2011/gt800005.pdf

I would think it should be the same for RVs.

Did you remove the RV or stay and soak up our sunshine ? We charge for Sunshine

Flew down, picked up, slept in it over night at a Cummins dealer (which did a poor job, later finding out once I got back) for service in the AM then headed back 2800+miles to home.
