And now that you mention it, our Florida purchase was delivered to us in Wisconsin.

In 2006 we purchased a used vehicle in Florida while on vacation. At the time we lived in NY. The Florida dealer had an agent in NY pay the tax to NY and apply for a NY registration. The fee was about $100, and everything went smoothly. The dealer also issued us temporary FL plates to drive home on.

Note: The NY sales tax was higher than the FL tax, and it's possible that the tax was split between the states with FL getting its full share and NY getting the remainder.

I doubt that this is no longer possible, but calls to a few high volume AUTO dealers should answer the question. I say AUTO dealers, because they have a much higher volume of sales, and are more likely to know the various laws.

FYI regarding FL purchasing living out of state. We purchased our new coach in Fl while living in NC. The closing finance director knew her stuff. She contacted the state of NC, actually had all tax codes from 50 states! Spoke directly to Raleigh NC DMV, paid NC their tax, which we paid her at closing, issued a temp. tag, provided all applicable records that allowed us to return to NC with receipts and documents in hand, make sure your have proof of tax payment to your respectitive home state or country, IMO only, I am not quoting law, she saw to that. You are not required to pay FL sales tax when purchasing and transporting a vehicle to your home state for registration, if you did the dealer was wrong.

I bought last year in FL and live in SC. Paid nothing to FL. Dealer collected SC sales tax and I got temp tags. Registered in SC after I got home.

Sure sounds like I got bent over real bad. All the checking and calls I've made seemed to make no difference.

I new about our 10% but the FLORIDA 6% was unknown. Totally stupid.
Go online, don't waste time talking on the phone. The FL state tax dept. will have a tax refund form, you fill it out and mail it in along with a copy of the bill of sale and the documents showing it was brought into Canada and registered here.

Somebody dropped the ball on your purchase though, they should never have collected tax on an out-of-state sale in the first place.

When I bought my m/h in Tampa FL and went in to get the title changed and temp. tags to drive it home with I just showed them my Ontario drivers license and they never even questioned it, it was something like $10 to change title and another $20 for the temp. tags.

Any guidance would be appreciated.
I talked right to the Flo-Rida State Tax Dep't. and they said it didn't matter who the purchaser is. They said if it was purchased in Florida at a business then you have to pay. Exempt if it was a private sale.
Man if I can get back $3,000.00 someone will get a REWARD.

Hey, whoever you talked to works for the state, don't assume they know what they're doing. They can easily dismiss you over the phone with no consequences. Send in a form, and they have to do something with it, maybe actually check to see if you are due a refund.
