I have a coach with a 50 A system . If I buy a surge protector for 50 A system and have to use a 30 A adaptor at a 30 A park will it still protect me on that circuit?

yup. if you use a portable unit then you'd need the adapter. if you get a hard wired unit no adapter on the surge protector would be needed.

The coach hooks to the pedestal. That is where the 50/30 adapter attaches, whether portable or hard wired.

of course it does. my point was if the OP buys a portable 50-amp SP he will need a 30/50 adapter to connect to a 30-amp post. if he has a hard wired unit he just plugs into the 30-amp connection like he's doing now.

Yes it will protect you and yes if you have 50a service you will need to use your 50/30 adapter. But you'd have to use that adapter anyway if that was all that was available on the pedestal.
