My front leaf springs are squeaky and Ford tells me that the suspension is not covered by Fords warranty. They say that the suspension has been modified in that a house has been set on it.

I called the motorhome assistance hotline and they tell me that yes it is covered and that the chassis has not been modified in any way. They say the only way that the leaf springs would not be covered would be if I had the motorhome overloaded.

They are fighting it out with my ford dealer so im waiting for a phone call back with good news.

Has anyone had issues with their chassis warranty such as this?

Sounds like some dealer gobbledy gook.

So the dealer says the motorhome chassis has been modified by building a motorhome on a Ford motorhome chassis? Say what?

It sounds like Ford will have the dealer take care of it.

Years ago I had a similar issue with a E450 Minnie Winnie. After a call to Winnebago, they contacted Ford and the coach was repaired and ready to roll the next day.

The easiest solution to any problem is to tell the customer NO and hope he'll go away. Just setting a load on the chassis does not modify it. If the chassis is modified, I'm sure it was done to Ford's specs. Tell the dealer you cal BS on this one and take it up the line.

Squeaking springs? That is not rocket science. I had squeaking springs on my DP and a Freightliner rep told me it was just some plastic spacers that had worn out and he gave me the spacers. I installed them myself and they did the trick. The springs squeak at the eye of the spring and that is where the spacers go. The spacers are made for your particular spring and a good spring or suspension shop will have them. Ford may consider this a part that wears out like tires, battery, etc and won't cover it under warranty. If so try to obtain the spacers from them. You can probably install them yourself. You need to spread the springs to do it and I ended up using a 5' steel digging bar.

Hey Steve,

I wouldn't want "they" working on my rig, even if "they" get "they" straigtened out about their warranty coverage. Find another dealer, or whomever "they" are.

Thanks for the advice guys.

Ford motorhome assistance called me today and told me that the dealer would charge me for the visit but I am to submit the bill and be reimbursed. very strange.

If the dealer decides that it is a weight issue then it will not be covered under warranty.

I dont see how it could be a weight issue. My left front was 500 lbs heavier then my left but well under the max. After adding the weight of my wife and overweight dog and maybe a peice of luggage and a few pops in the fridge , the weight should be even. But still we are not talking about much weight here.

Now I have one more question. If my motorhome is lightly loaded could that cause suspension squeaks? The reason I ask is because after filling the fresh water tank full of water today, the extra weight seemed to calm the squeaking springs a bit.

Maybe I just have to gain some weight? My gvwr is 22000 and I weighed in at around 18400

Steve

I would go to a different dealer - one who is familiar with the Ford F53 motorhome chassis and won't jerk you around like this guy. Given this guy's attitude toward you and your coach, he is very likely to find a "weight issue" and once he goes on record with that you could have an uphill battle getting reimbursed.

And if you want a leather jacket it is worth the drive to Acton.

BUT, if you live in "GEORGETOWN" it is a much shorter drive.

Don

ps: Not many will get that one. We lived in Milton for many years.

When I hear a saga like this I am so glad that I can crawl under my MH and do some things for myself. I got plastic spacers for the leaf springs from Freightliner free even out of warranty and put them in myself. My squeaks stopped. I hate these finger pointing exercises. Much more time and perhaps money is spent than doing it yourself.
