Does anyone have any experience with changing out their genset in thier unit?

We have a Cummings/Onan 7KW genset in our '05 national Dolphin that is about to go under the wrench in the repair shop. A new, replacement Onan is over $4.5K plus installation etc. The similar model Generac is a little over $3K. The price difference has caused me to ask the forum this question: is the Generac a drop-in replacement for the Onan in the MH?

Any words of wisdom would be appreciated. JJ

J.J. I can not answer your question, but what is wrong with the onan? Have you taken it to Cummins South down by the Atl airport. They are a full servive onan center. Give Tom a Call in the RV Coach dept.

I have had both Onan and Genwreck. I wouldn't have a Genwreck if you gave it to me.

Surely it isn't going to cost anywhere near the 4.5K to fix what you have.

There's a reason for that.

As previously stated, I would seriously doubt that your existing Onan is not repairable.

There is a reason that the Onan is 50% more than the Genawreck. I'd get the Onan repaired.

I too have had both...and would fix the Onan.

Gennajunk has a bad reputation for good reason. Had one, never again.

I just R&R'd a 5500 Generac Gas. I saw no reason I couldn't have replaced it with say an Onan Gas. Just the obvious mount changes and mods to fuel lines, batt cable etc.

However, I must agree with the others. Repairing the Onan would be my first choice as it would be cheaper, unless you threw rods out the side of the block

I've never seen a Generac that works properly.

If you have a problem with an Onan then must not be running it enough or doing the maintainence on it. Those things are designed to run forever as long as you keep oil in it and clean fuel going thru it.

X2 on going to a Cummins Onan service center. I have used these in two different states and believe they are better than most RV service/dealers. BTW, the RV rate at Bridgeway Cummins in Mt. Clemens MI is $117/Hr

I also went to the cummings repair station "st. louis Mo." they made repairs while a waited had to remove my unit which meant dropping straight down from under the coach after unhooking electric and fuel lines. made repairs and replaced. $175.00 and a 1 1/2 hrs later i was pleased. Bryan

This answers my question about replacing the Onan.
Since we got the MH ('05 National Dolphin) about a year ago, I've been running the genset for 15-20 minutes a month. I don't know what the situation was before we got it.
This place (iRV2) would be worth it at twice the price.
