I decided to dig out my grease gun to inoculate my chassis. I am a believer in synthetics so I use Mobil 1 synthetic grease. When I opened the container where I keep my grease gun I noticed red oil had leaked out of the gun. After I cleaned up the mess it dawned on me that maybe this synthetic grease is running out of the joints I work so hard to keep lubricated. I decided to do a quick search on the web and this is what I found. Just thought I'd pass it on.

Thanks for answering a question I always wondered about. I will now take the pressure off the gun.

-- I recently bought new grease for the Allegro, and last weekend I found a grease gun of my fathers to put it in, which meant removing the old Pennzoil grease cartridge. There was only about 2" of grease left, but it was the consistency of modeling clay, it was quite a pain to clean up. Seems it was pretty much ALL thickener and NO oil...Have NO idea how old it was, but 15 or 20 years isn't out of the question!

Treasure that old grease gun,it probably was made by a Company whose name you know, in a place you can relate to and will outlast a six-pack of grease cartridges.

Grease has a clay base to keep the lubricant in suspension and "firm". Over time whe not stored under ideal conditions, the oil will leach out.

Early 2000 I also used Mobil 1 synthetic grease. Although my grease gun is used several times a year, I also noticed that red oil leaked out of the gun. I use synthetic grease on everything. Have never had a problem. For some reason??? I switched to Valvoline SynPower Synthetic about 6 years ago. Have never experienced any seperation of the product.

I like machanical things and I maintenance the heck out of them. Raised in farm country and drove to a one room school at age 14 on a school permit with anything I could get running (faster than my horse and at the time more fun). That was 58 years ago and I have gone thru more cars and trucks than I can count with NEVER a problem. I don't think you can use to much oil and grease or use it to offten.
