If you have an infared temperture tester you could easily check to see what that is. I use one for many things like checking tire temps, air conditioner temps water heater, meat on the grill. THey are worth the cost of them today. What temperature on the dash does it say the water temperature is? That should be close to the ambient temp of the radiator near the altenator. Good luck and keep us posted as to the outcome.

Just for reference, I recently installed an automatic fire extinguishing system in my engine bay. In conversations with the company I found that the normal automatic heads are designed to pop at 170 degrees (Fahrenheit). They won't work in a diesel pusher due to the higher heat so they went to a 280 degree sprinkler head for the RV applications. That tells me that you can exceed 170 degrees in certain normal (but hot) situations, although I doubt you'd ever get any where near 280 unless a fire had started.
