We have been thinking of transferring residency/registration to Texas from Oregon at the end of the year. However, I have heard that a vehicle inspection is required every year in Texas.

Is this true? What if you take your time roaming about the country and don't expect to be back that way in years?

Many thanks for sharing your experince.

Yes, an annual safety inspection is required on vehicles registered in Texas. In addition, certain vehicles also are required to undergo annual emissions inspection or testing in EPA non-attainment areas in Texas.

You might ask this question to the Livingston, Texas-based escapees organization at http://www.escapees.com to see how their fulltiming members handle this requirement.

My Texas fulltiming friends tell me that the vehicle license tag renewal is not dependent on the inspection.

They renew the tags by mail every year, and the next time they're in Texas the have to get an inspection.

That is correct. Regardless of how long expired the inspection sticker is, you are expected to get the expired inspection renewed "within a reasonable time" after you return to TX. I normally get mine renewed within the week after we return to the state if it is expired. I've never been stopped or questioned on mine when it has been expired, but figured I would just show fuel receipts to show I had just returned to the state.

But when you first arrive and go to register it, you will need a safety inspection and certificate before you can get the tags.

I registered my motorhome and car by mail. The county clerk's office sent me a waiver to sign stating the vehicles were out of state and I did not need to get them safety inspected until I arrived in Texas. I registed them in September and got the inspections in January when we finally got to Texas.

You are required to have your vehicle inspected when you return to TX. No time limit for being out of state. Same for PA.
