That Blasted White Corrosive Powder!
 You Know...that corrosive white power that gets on the metal slide trays in the battery compartments. What causes it and after you clean it off with metal brush and water how can you keep it from coming back?  ANY IDEAS?

When I installed an on board battery watering system, the problem vanished.

It's corrosive acid from the batteries. Neutralize it with a baking soda paste and a scrub brush then rinse with clean water. Somewhere on the forum, someone posted about repainting with some special paint.

That Blasted White Corrosive Powder!
When you clean things, use a slurry of baking soda and water. The white corrosion is a reaction between the metal and the battery acid vapor (hydrochloric acid) that vents from the batteries. The baking soda will neutralize the acid. Hard to get rid of with standard wet cells.

JFXG--I always thought battery acid is sulfuric acid.

Mineral oil to keep the vapors in check seems to work well.

I had a a lot of problems in the battery compartment to solve in the "new to us" MH - the corrosion being one of the most pressing. I really didn't want to see my eight (8) batteries in the rear view mirror!
I gutted, cleaned, replaced, painted, redid some wiring and/or connections, and removed the bottom 1/4 inch steel plate the batteries rested on. I then took the plate to a local Rhino Liner shop where they sandblasted it down to clean metal and then sprayed it [U]completely[U] with a thick layer of their impervious material. Everything now washes off easily and never touches the bare metal.
I'm a believer in preventative maintenance so I always keep the battery compartment spotless; and having rebuilt that area correctly has now made that job a snap. I also installed Water Miser battery caps. I have no vapor or condensation collecting on the batteries or anywhere else.

3 years ago with the purchase of new batteries we installed the Pro Fill battery water fill system AND those red & green felt "chemical" rings on EVERY terminal. While out, we also painted the metal areas with acid proof paint. The only maint. we now do is check the water level every 3-4 months and hose the dust off at the same time...

I have read of folks who fill their flooded wet cell batteries FULL, I mean FULL, and of course this means they spit acid all over the battery compartment.
I have seen folks tell us to fill to the BOTTOM OF THE FILLER TUBE (also known as a split ring) and again they spit acid all over the place.
Fill to 1/8 to 1/4 inch BELOW the bottom of the split ring,, they do not spit so much if you do that.. IF the batteries need charging make it 1/2 inch or more (Above the plates a bit is good), then charge and top off to 1/8 to 1/4.
But cleaning is routine maintenance.

With the batteries filled properly add a teaspoon of mineral oil to each cell. It will float on top of the water in the battery and will prevent any water from bubbling up with the escaping gas. It also means the batteries don't lose water over time.
No water escaping, no acid buildup forming.

I became tired of painting, scraping, filling, extra expense of the cheaper battery's! AGM's are now my only choice. Going on seven years strong and maintance free.

 You have given me some good ideas to try and some great PM to do. I do like the mineral oil idea and not over-filling the batteries. Also the rhino lining idea is very interesting. I know they make a great clear lining that can be sprayed on the front for a rock/bug barrier. Happy Camping
