The difference between a class "A" and Class "C" units

OK, I'm looking to purchase my first RV and have one that I really like . the Four Winds Hurricane 31J class A Gas fuel unit. There is also a Four Winds 31K class C, also gas fuel.

They have identical ( to me ) floor plans and options. Price is about the same. Size is the same at 31 feet.

So I'm confused on the difference in a class A and a class C. They have a different exterior look certainly, but I don't know why I should choose one over the other ?

Help in understanding this would be greatly appreciated. I plan to full time, solo with a dog. I'd like to be able to do some boon docking in National Parks, but not for extended periods of time or completely off the beaten track. I do plan to tow a small toad.

We have had two Class C's and are now on our first Class A. I wouldn't willingly go back to a C. I feel, if nothing else, the A has a much stronger chassis and doesn't feel as flexible going down the road. May be my imagination. However, I have been under our homes and I never liked seeing how much weight was resting on the frame where the manufacturers had welded extensions onto the van (Class C) chassis to make it long enough.
Then, there's that view out the cockpit of the A!

I went from an A to a C my new C is actually bigger than the A the floor plan is very differant. The storage is actaully better on the C than it was on the A. My frame was built to be a RV so no welded on exstensions. The view is a little differant and there are some very big blind spots when turning right and needing to see the left on as curve. Drives just like my van as far as wind roll and trucks passing me.

The 31K "C", if you opt for the overhead bunk. has more sleeping capacity. The 31J "A" has the option of two roof airs. CCC capacity is probably higher on the class A also.
It comes down to how you will use it and how many occupants at a given time.

The storage on the "A" is stated to be 99 CU.ft. Not stated for the "C" but it looks like more storage on the A.

Driving the "A" scares me, cause it looks bigger than the same size "C". Not logical, I know. However I have to learn to drive an RV no matter which one I pick.

Keep those opinions coming folks ! I need the help. < grin >

When we went from trailers to MH, I was more interested in a Class C. On the other hand, my wife was absolute about wanting a Class A. She wanted the higher riding position with the large windshield. She also wanted the ability to get up easily and move about the coach when rolling.

We decided on a used Newmar Diesel pusher and have been very pleased with the Class A. We worked hard to find a floor plan that suited us, on a smaller length (our coach is 33 feet) so that we would have access to most State and National parks.

I highly recommend that you drive both and spend a lot of time sitting in both to try and find the model that best meets your needs. My wife did not enjoy driving our diesel trk and 33 foot trailer at all. she will drive the coach anywhere anytime. She loves driving it and is good at it! The trailer combo made her very nervous.

As important as C or A, is floor plan. Make certain that the coach is going to accomadate your particualr travel and camping style.

Size of holding tanks the same for:
Fresh
Gray
Black
Size of gas tanks?
Difference between GVWR and GCWR on them
The CCC for each
Can you get to both sides of the bed to make it up?

I have a Hurricane 30Q and the storage is adequate for the two of us and perhaps for you and your two pets, but it is not great. I have had a couple of A's but also looked at a few C's when looking. I opted for the A for a couple of reasons. First the view from the drivers seat was much better as you sit higher and can see forever. Second, when parked, the A gives a much bigger feeling of space than the C. Sit on the sofa and look around. The C will feel more confining than the A with it great big picture window.

You didn't mention if either has slides. They too will give the impression of more space. My 30Q does not have them and I didn't want them, most people do.

Driving a 31 ft class A is no big deal going forward. Backing up can be a bit of a challange but then so is a C.

I just traded in my 2007 Winni sightseer 31' for a 2011 32' Class C. The A had a shorter turning radius, more storage,more weight capacity than our C. But we wanted the two cab doors and we love the side hall feature. The bathroom is HUGE and it divides the bedroom and living room making it seem like two seperate rooms. It has all the new stuff that we were going to upgrade the A with and it rides a whole lot smoother. Did I say the bathroom is Huge? I think it drives easier and the wife will drive this where she wouldn't try driving the A.

I find "a"s are easier to drive.

As some have said, the C has the overhead bunk, although we did have one in our last class A. The A is usually a stronger larger frame, usually with greater load and towing capacity. There is better visability (larger windshield) and usually larger storage compartments in a class A. When you first drive an A, it feels much wider than driving a C since the cab on a C is the width of a van, even though the rest of it is just as wide as the A.
