I have a Verizon Hotspot so I can connect the laptop to the internet, email anywhere and don't have to depend on others wifi. Of course, if you have a smart phone, you can do the same. (Mine is dumb, or maybe it is just the operator!)

I carry a rand McNally map. I know everyone is saying but I have internet on my phone. Seems like the only times I have needed a map I was out of service area and couldn't get a signal.
