Thor Quality

We are shopping for a new MH and are considering a Fleetwood, Coachmen or Thor unit. I can find information about the construction of the Fleetwood and Coachmen but very little on Thor. Also, have heard some negative comments about Thor. Opinions from members of this forum who have knowledge about Thor would be greatly appreciated.

some people say run from them, but it all depends on how handy you are... will you check the motor oil before cranking it? or would you be lazy and let others check the simple things and trust them to take your money on their word?
I bought mine from an individual and he had his trip logs, maintenance sheets he did himself, spares for the MH ex. fuel/oil filters and he was diligent with it. This all depends on you if you accidentally run under a tree branch and scrape up the top a little or crack a vent are going to get up there and check it out/ fix it or complain later when you have a leak from negligence?

You can go to the individual manufacturer subsection here and read read read. Also the selling dealer is extremely important. It is worth an extra drive to go to a dealer with a better reputation!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I also suggest that you visit the Thor section of the forum to read and decide for yourself; http://www.irv2.com/forums/f121/
Thor manufactures a number of RVís so to brand the entire Thor company as having a quality problem is a little unfair. It is like saying every GM car has a quality problem when it could be centered on one model.

I have a much maligned Serrano, 2011.
Had some early life issues, all minor. Biggest was a loose connector on the inverter.

By looking at all of the other manufacturer sections, there are troubles galore with all of them, from low to high end units.

I'm not worried!

Happy trails

I'm sorry, but I'm having a hard time understanding what relevance your comments have to the OP's question about build quality on new Thors.

Ditto times 10 what Jack Arnold said.

And, I can tell you from my last 2 RV's that they are well built and offer a good price point.
My last RV was a Dutchmen (by Thor) Denali Travel Trailer 260FB - Loved it!
My current RV is a Damon (now by Thor) Outlaw 3611 - LOVE IT!

And since Thor now owns Airsteam, you can see that the quality can be there...but we all need to be smart shoppers.

Best of luck and safe travels

I think all coach manufacturers have quality issues of sorts. Sometimes it is not their fault it is the auxiliary equipment,s fault. (Dometic, Norcold refrigerator recalls come to mind, and Workhorse chassis brake recall too.) Does this mean they don't build good coaches?

Thor must be doing something right, they are still around after the last RV reorginization due to the economic downturn.

BTW- I love my Thor/ Fourwinds Hurricane.

Thanks

Thanks for the replies. I think I can feel comfortable with buying a Thor coach. Now I just have to find one that my wife likes the layout and I like the bells and whistles.

While I have never owned a Thor product, I look at RVs with an engineers eyes and I am not impressed with the quality, fit and finish of the Thor products. Thor puts up a great shiny interior with a lot of glitz. It stops there. The overall quality from Thor is not what I would expect in a good RV.

The couple that have been right next to us for the past 2 months have a new Thor Tuscany that they purchased from CW back in the late summer. They have a list of issues they are trying to get fixed that is as long as my arm. Thus far CW has been of very little help to them. Mostly due to their shop being overbooked and ineptitude on the part of local CW management. They have spoken with Thor and will be taking it to the plant in the spring at Thor's expense.

OH WAIT...wanted to add that it is significant that Thor is NOT ONLY still in business, they have GROWN.

When the economy was hit in the last decade it was RV market demands, including owner loyalty that determined who was going to stay around and who did not make it.

Nobody wants an ORPHIN RV...like here:

Ken,

I am also an engineer so I look at things with an engineerís eye as well. I have owned two Thor motor coaches, a 2010 Serrano and my current 2013 Palazzo. I feel that the form fit and function of both coaches were/are good with few complaints. On the other hand the Workhorse chassis (break recall) and Navistar engine on the Serrano gave me a lot of problems. I had an engine problem (reoccurring) that resulted in 3 tows to the shop plus I had it in the shop 8 more times (11 in total in <6000 miles). I will say that Navistar did stand behind their product and tried to get it fixed but I lost confidence and my DW was always worried that it would leave us on the side of the road so I traded it in on my Palazzo. It was not the Thor coach it was the engine and if we did not have all the engine problems I would still own our Serrano.

It was not Thorís fault that I was having problems with the Navistar engine. Minus the engine issues we loved the Serrano! Our Palazzo with the Freightliner chassis and Cummings engine has always got use where we wanted to go and we are very pleased with our Palazzo.
