To be fair to your guest, those hour meters ARE very loud. Even in the daytime they can be quite intrusive and clearly audible over the noise of the generator and aircon. I refuse to have a ticking clock in the bedroom for the same reason.

That would work in a gasoline or LP powered generator...(on a diesel generator, which has no spark plugs or plug wires... not so much.

I replaced our ticking mechanical hour meter with a replacement silent LCD display hour meter that I ordered from mcmaster.com. It was an easy plug and play. Just disconnected the wires from the old meter and reconnected to the new. New meter snapped into the mounting hole left by the old. Easy fix.
