Over the years we have found that we go up (north) the west coast in the spring so we don't have spring thunderstorms and tornados to dodge, work across the US during the summer (some years very warm, others not so much) and then down (south) the east coast in the fall as the leaves are turning.

I lot of people want to see the colors change in New England in the fall so if you want to be a particular place you might consider reservations for that time period.
