We tow a 96 Tracker and it follows like a shadow. If I were you I would ask a front end shop about possible causes of this. It might be as simple as changing the caster.

Sounds to me like the Tracker's front wheel "caster" adjustment is way off. Have the front end aligned and ask them specifically to get the caster in spec.

Backing up should have the opposite effect of what you are seeing, if the caster is properly adjusted. That's anothe rreason I am sure your tracker's front end is way out of alignment.

BobandKay,

I have a 97 GEO Tracker. Mine has done that twice so far. Both times it was when I was going very slow and turning hard right. Once I slow to a stop and started again it would be fine. I recently had an alignment done. I did it before and after. But Like I said it has only done it twice so I have not done anything about it. If you hear anything, Let me know please. I had wondered if a stering stabilizer on the Tracker may help.
