Treatment for surface rust

I bought a new 07 last April. Although it was undercoated at the factory it still had surface rust on the undercarrage from sitting at the dealers. This past winter I've had it in storage locally (indoor/unheated on concrete). I expect there may be some additional surface rusting.

To the best of my recollection the area involved is larger than I would want to have to hand sand with a wire brush. Is there some method of "treating" this without hand scraping?

Yes there is, but any "loose" rust or "flakes" will have to be stripped manually before you start any treatment if you want a long lasting result. Doing this job half now will require you to do this very soon again. The stripping could be done by a wire brush on a cordless drill.

The er are several primer type products available at your local car parts dealer - some more expensive/better than others.

I did the following my self on our 40 ' motorhome and this took me quite a few hours: Wire brush surface - primer that "eats" the rust - Rustoleum paint - rubberrized undercoat.

I hope that this takes care of the rust problem for a few years.

I just spray with WD40 and don't worry about it.

I have used it on auto, RV and marine with great success. It is a bit of a chore to apply but it does an excellent job of covering and preventing rust. As above, you do need to brush off loose rust but is actually adhears better if there is surface rust on the material being coated.
It also comes in different finishes and colors.
