Rig sat in the cold north from late jan until the other day when I turned the key for the first time. Engine fired right up but the warning light lit up. Lots of coolant leaking from the red gizmo attached to the side of the turbo. From a search I believe it to be the turbo actuator. Wondering if something froze over the winter. Looking down through the bedroom floor it appears that there are 4 allen screws holding it to the turbo. Has anyone experienced a coolant leak from the turbo area?

Thanks! I came up empty with my searches. Our problem seems to be identical. .....broke down in our driveway, cancelled trip, same leak, the only difference is we have no warranty :( I have an appoint ment at a Cummins repair shop Wed morning ..its only a 2 Mile drive so I wont need a tow.
Thanks for sending me that thread I was beginning to think I was the only one on the planet to have this kind of leak.

I will definitely follow up with the outcome. I always wonder how the mechanics can work on these engines where they have to reach down through a hole in the floor compared to popping the hood open on a truck. I poured some antifreeze in today and after half of the second jug it all came rushing out almost as fast as it was poured in. The leak is near the top of the engine so I am curious as to how much coolant is left in the engine after the leak stops. Do you think a two mile drive will do any harm ie overheat the turbo? I doubt it will reach operating temp in such a short time.

If it is running out as fast as you pour it in, I would say you should not drive it......it is just going to pump all the anti freeze out.......If you can't do this and determine what is leaking and what it is going to take to repair the leak, I would have it towed to the repair facility..........better than roaching the engine.......and then spending 30k for the repairs! If you read through the thread I posted, Larry had his towed to the shop.

Well maybe I exaggerated on how fast the leak is. Maybe i would lose a couple gallons in the two mile drive I guess. System holds around 11 gallons. I could top it off with water and go for it. I just hate the thought of being towed. On the other hand I dont relish the thought of frying the engine.

Maybe, since they are so close, they might send a mechanic out to have a look-see , and then follow his advice on weather or not to drive it.

I called a mechanic ( brother of neighbour) he says a diesel engine wont heat up in that short time and advised to keep rad cap turned half way so that pressure cant build. I took some videos and pics today and can clearly see that the steel actuator casting is cracked. That puzzle s me. If I can figure out how, I will post pics. Your idea of talking to the garage before taking it in makes sense. I will call mon morning.

All attempts at posting pics and video s failed. Videos were to large and the pics were the wrong format. Anyways I think the leak is coming from what is called the coolant inlet for the turbo. The braided hose leads to this inlet where there are two allen screws. Will post results later in the week.

Oh I forgot to mention after looking at the pics over and over it may not be a crack... it looks like its possibly two seperate pieces. So hopefully just a gasket.
