I wonder if he even knew anyone turned the water off? You mention he wasn't there at the time.
Anyway, if he knew you shut it off, I'm sure he was grateful for your meeting the minimum requirements for being a good neighbor.

Thank you for doing the right thing. A few months ago I was filling the fresh water tank. I stepped away for "just a few minutes" and of course got caught up in a conversation. When I returned, my neighbor was staring at the water pouring from the overflow, wondering if he should get involved. As long as you know what you are doing, then do it. Thanks.
