Unusual smell out of no where

Suddenly out of the blue we started smelling a weird musty wet burnt dryer sheet smell, I can't place the scent. It came up out of the blue when the ac kicked on, even though it was running all day, the compressor seems to have an unusual cycle from what I'm familiar with. Not sure what to do. I looked up top in the dark but I don't know what to look for, I just hope what ever fumes I'm smelling can't harm my family. Please help,

If the compressor is cycling different and/or shorter and you are having a 'burnt' smell, I would seriously look at he compressor.. Its prolly on its way out. Just changed out an AC doing this. Finally got to where it would pop the breaker 30 secs after startup..

I shut down the suspect ac unit and am having a professional out in the morning. The compressor runs for a second or two, but it still seems to be blowing cool air. I am pretty sure now that the smell is refrigerant, it has an oily smell as well as what I described. So far so good, the smell has subsided, I'm just glad we have a fold out up front other wise it would be a long night
