Have you tried to contact Whirlpool. Front loaders usually, if not always, have a lock on the door so it can't be opened during operation. My Splendide has about a 5-8 second delay after if completely finishes a wash cycle before it unlocks the door. This is indicated be a very pronounced "click-click" sound.
I have heard of a couple of folks with a Splendide that broke the door handle trying to force it open either before the auto-unlock activated or when the auto-unlock failed.
