Washing a MH in mid Michigan
Hi all,
Since getting my MH in July I only washed it once, and that was as Cotys truck wash in Saginaw. They charged something less than 40$, the job was good but a small bit of a water came in the passenger window, also its a bit out my way.
Anyone have a place they can recommend in Mid Michigan?

Have you tried calling local auto detailers and see if they do MHs? I simple wash shouldn't cost a lot.

That was a wax also though.

Even though I'm old and decrepit, I still try to wash and wax my own rig. I do one section at a time and it provides some needed exercise. I really cringe having a truck wash do it but I know many here like to use truck washes. But when I'm just not physically able to do it anymore, I too would try to use a mobile service. If you find they are too expensive, sometimes you may be able to find a laborer or high school kid who you can supervise to do it for a much lower cost.
The folks at an RV park next to us last year used a guy they happened to find on craigslist who just did non-skilled odd jobs and charged about $15/hr. I was skeptical when he told me he found the guy on craigslist but the guy turned out to be very good. He was a nice guy and seemed very honest. He worked diligently for about 3-hours on their rig washing it and then hand drying so there was no spotting. It came to about $50 or so. He said he gave the guy a little extra but I didn't ask how much.

I have not tried washing itself Theroc but I am open to it. I could ask the guys that wash my house windows once a year.

Please don't do that (or just find some cheap labor). Would you ask your barber to do some surgery? Just because both jobs require cutting, doesn't mean it makes any sense to think someone can do both jobs (ok, it's not a great analogy, but you get my point). If someone has no clue how to properly wash a vehicle, they can ruin it in one washing.
Everyone has their own expections of what a clean car or RV should look like, and I admit I am way off the deep end on car / RV care and the time and effort I put into both (just to wash our smaller Class A, it takes me about 5-6 hours or so to do it properly, 4 hours if my wife helps me out). No one touches my cars or RV but me, but that's me.
Regards

Thank for your concern, I appreciate it.
I would ask their company if this was something they offer. Just a starting to point :-)

Well, yes, I suppose it depends on what your expectations are. Are you a nitpicker who details your cars with a q-tip? Do you have an older rig that doesn't need the precise care that Betr2Trvl expects? Don't get me wrong, I'm in the same general camp as Betr2Trvl and that's why I do it myself and would never run it through a Blue Beacon or any other truck wash. To have my rig washed with the same brushes and techniques used on semi trailers is not something I'd want it to be subjected to. Yes, many here trust and use Blue Beacon. We know that by all the previous threads on this subject that Blue Beacon is popular and recommended.
However, depending on who it is and if they are receptive to rather close supervision, I would trust a conscientious high-school kid or general laborer to wash my rig if I wasn't able to do it. They'd have to follow my exact instructions and use my supplies. Washing a motorhome is not brain surgery so I personally don't require the person to be experienced nor have any special expertise.
If you'd like to know how I wash my rig, PM me and I'd be willing to share my experiences through the years and the things I use. I hesitate to describe what I do on the forum again as it almost turned into a flame war the last time as everybody has a different opinion on what is best when it comes to washing and detailing a motorhome.
No disrespect to Betr2Trvl, but I don't think it would hurt to at least ask your window washing guys if they'd be willing to do it, how much they'd charge, and if they'd be receptive to doing it exactly as per your instructions (and even if they don't mind you watching them while they do it). If they don't answer any of the questions to your satisfaction, don't use them.
eta: To add, however, my comments do not apply to the roof. I would definitely use a bonded and insured individual or company to clean my roof if I physically were not able to do it myself. In fact, your window washers are more than likely licensed, bonded, and insured so you might ask them if they are covered to wash your motorhome and its roof.

Hi Theroc,
I wash my 7 year old Toyota 4 runner every 3 to 4 weeks and not really that anal about it.
My coach is a 12 year old Damon gasser with no paint
I do appreciate the offer of the pointers via pm.

I'm sure it's still pretty cold in Michigan but when it gets warmer, you may want to give washing your Damon yourself a try and see how it goes. The reason I say wait until it's warmer is that way you can take your time. Do it by sections, if necessary, and don't stress yourself out by thinking that you have do it all in one shot.
If you are okay using a ladder, you can wash it using the same brush, sponge, cloth, etc. as you use washing your 4Runner (I love 4Runners, btw. I've had several through the years but the 1986 4Runner I had was the best vehicle I've owned; reliability-wise and in just the manner it felt on and off the road).
Otherwise, you can use a soft long-handled brush. I actually have several varieties of brushes that I have purchased through the years but not always use. My favorite is one similar to THIS ONE but there are a variety of brushes on the market that will suffice. Camco makes one that is readily available to order at Camping World, Home Depot, Walmart, etc. for about the same price ... GO HERE for description. I don't recommend using the Camco one with a hose attached, however.

Hi Theroc,
I will admit straight up the 4 runner goes in the car wash. It's my second one and I love it. I had a 2003 v8 before that, if I still had it I would of never of bought a MH as could of towed up to 7500 TT (my v6 is 5000lbs).
I give washing the Damon myself a go :-)

If you have any road salt on your rig, get it washed and get it washed quickly. The newer liquid treatment of roads is even worse. Here in New England brake lines, and general under carriage components are corroding at an alarming and expensive rate. In another thread someone mentioned just running your vehicle over a lawn sprinkler, not a bad idea, just to get it rinsed off.
If you don't have the salt worries I would look further into the roving car wash guys, they do a pretty good job!

Hi Firewall,
The salt is really bad here. I have not driven the rig this winter, when I last checked underneath it did not look so bad.
