What are the laws regarding traveling with a gun through a state like NJ

Is it possible to legally travel through a state (like NJ) that does not allow handguns (does not have concealed carry reciprocity) if you were to completely disassemble the gun and stow it in a locked storage box in the basement?

Is there any way to travel legally with a handgun through states like these?

I'm from FL and looking at traveling in the north (think VT and ME. How would I get there I can't travel through MD or NJ or NY according the map below)?

I’m certainly not an attorney, but from what I understand federal law allows you to transport handguns, configured like you said above, through any state as long as you’re just passing through. Stop for fuel etc OK staying overnight is a no no.
Like I said that’s my understanding.
Personally, I think the whole thing is a Hugh infringement on our second amendment, but I guess that’s another story.

After more research and according to this website https://www.gunstocarry.com/gun-laws...york-gun-laws/ and this video https://youtu.be/3Xs_jrnmwoU it is not possible to transport a firearm through NY (there is no way unless you have a NY issued permit - which you could never get).
NY does not recognize the Federal
Firearm Owners Protection Act" so you will go to jail. I agree with your comments on the 2nd Amendment.

I could not find any info on traveling through NJ but I'll bet it is the same. I guess I'll skip any trips to the NE.

I was a trooper in NY a long time ago... if you were travelling from a place where you could legally possess a firearm to a place where you could legally possess one AND it was secured in a locked compartment not available to you and the ammo was in a separate compartment, it was legal. I don't think the law has changed.

Just think of the possibility of a police officer ever looking in the closet in you bedroom without a good reason.

X2 I don’t think states can preempt federal law on transporting.

The FOPA law referenced says it applies to "Interstate travel" - I assume that means "traveling through the state on any roadways and not just the Interstate highway system.

I can carry concealed throughout the country; so I do, but if you can't and want personal protection in your vehicle there is a great substitute!

Bear spray is illegal in a lot of places but anyone can have a can of wasp spray. Also the lawsuit will be cheaper. It's my preference over a gun (which is still in my pocket)

We spent last summer in NY and never had any issue with guns. Just keep them locked up out of sight and lips sealed.

Wondering how anyone would know if you had a firearm stored in your RV someplace, without a search?

If they force a search of it, without your permission, they are going to have a very large problem.

If they have a warrant to search your RV, and therefore have demonstrated to a judge a probable cause for same, YOU have problems way larger than the firearm.

If you have demonstrated probable cause for a search warrant to have been issued, you ought not to have a firearm anyway.

There was a long thread on whether or not to ever allow a voluntary search - most said "don't allow it", regardless, I want to be legal.

So reading through the FOPA it seems that it legal to transport a "legally owned" firearm through Any state if it locked up and the owner is only transport through the state (not staying/camping there - except overnight stays allowed while traveling).
