Most of the time the "whole house" filter is particle filter. It only gets the big stuff out of the water. There are a lot things it does not filter out. Some people want a more complete filtering system.

Mine has both! The refrig has a filter, the small one in the sink has a seperate filter and the whole house is filtered as well. I don't think the whole house filter, filters the tank water, only the water that is used from the hose. I could be wrong about that.

Its like beer instead of being filtered 3 time its only filtered 2times

It's a $500 option that you paid for!

My SWAG is it's to filter water when drawing from the fresh water tank.

Now that makes sense to me cuz if ur drawing water off fresh tank your gonna have the ice maker on the fridge turned off, but you still need to drink. (drinking is a hobby of mine)
